As much fun 40 years on as these pieces were when they burst like fireworks in the complacent faces of New York's chicest readers. Wolfe was at his most rascally and subversive of liberal verities and vanities in these essays; you almost have to tune out the devilish wit and pile-driving energy of his prose to make sure you don't miss what was then and still is some of the most astute, prophetic writing about the trajectory of bourgeois suppositions guiding culture change in America. Wolfe once wrote that what New York needed was simpler people, and here he is, carrying the flag, sharp end out, for a more down-to-earth urbanity right into the city's most fatuous scrums: art collecting, big-time writing, the make-or-break of the party circuit.

Enough About Wolfe, What about Me!

No one can say that Mr. Wolfe keeps his opinions to himself and unlike the talking heads, tv pundits, or (dare I say it) the writers from The New Yorker, he does illustrate a certain renaissance charm and keen observations Such as picking exactly the right fact to buttress his view.
To get to the point he is one of, if not the, better essayists of our time, agree or disagree, you might like what he says but you cannot fault how he says it, a brilliant stylist. If you want to revisit to anti-profundities of the seventies and understand what happened, this is the book for you.

Forgive me

Tom Wolf is a great writer. I have been spoiled by reading: The Right Stuff, A self made Man, and Bonfire of the Vanities. But this is not fiction, it is a review of culture and trends. It is a venue where his discriptive abilities at times overwhelm what he has to say. Had I been more into the culture he was evaluating I would consider this book great writing. If you love reading about near past New York culture, by all means, read it.
