Best SIFT resource I found

I wanted to leave a comment because when I was looking for SIFT study materials I did not find much online. I heard that this test was designed so that you could not prepare for it. This is untrue to an extent. I do have a background in science/math (BA in biology), so I did take physics I & II and math courses through calculus II... But I am NOT an engineer nor am I that talented at physics. I ended up scoring a 69, which is ~97th percentile (mean=50, SD=10). I wanted to share what I did to study in hopes that it will help someone like myself who was frustrated with the lack of resources. Educate yourself on Bernoulli's principle, Newton's three laws, and the Venturi effect (and understand how they affect helicopter aerodynamics). Read as much of this SIFT study exam as you have time for. Work the most on your weaknesses (mine were the Army Aviation Information and Mechanical Comprehension sections). Take every exam in this study guide and make flash cards for the questions you missed. The tips in the Hidden Figures and Spatial Apperception sections were extremely helpful and I believe that I was able to get every question correct on the exam as a result. I did notice on the exam that there were several questions in the Army Aviation Information section related to FAA guidelines... I had to guess on them but I was told after the exam by other test takers that the FAA guideline docs are available free online and are another great resource for learning. One more thing: watch YouTube videos on all this stuff!! I HIGHLY recommend watching the first three lectures of the following online course: "Mod-01 Lec-01 Introduction to Helicopter Aerodynamics and Dynamics." I learned so much about helicopter components and aerodynamics just by watching. Hope this helps someone else! -Diana

Great Fundamentals, Poor Editing

Bottom Line: I recently took the SIFT and scored a 68/80, not a bad score. I could attribute some of that to the preparation detailed in this book. The overall fundamentals and suggestions listed in this book are accurate. It seems they may have been rushed in the final chapter because that is where the book is still similar to what the sift would be like but the book its self just falls apart (figuratively).
The chapters on Simple Drawings, Hidden Figures Test, Army Aviation Information Test, and Spacial Apperception Test are all well written and fairly accurate, for an adaptive test. The Reading Comprehension chapter had good fundamentals but the actual practice test is barely like what I encountered on the actual test. The Math and Mechanical chapter's fundamentals teach about 95% of what I encountered but once you get to the practice tests its obvious where the editor must have died on the table and hit "send" button because the letting on the answers goes "a-z" randomly on questions and does not match the answer key. Furthermore there are several answers in the key that are completely wrong. I cant stress enough that the Army Aviation Information Test IS NOT ENOUGH alone. The book recommends that you thoroughly study the FAA Helicopter Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-21A) and the Military Flight Aptitude Tests and it is absolutely right.
Overall I would recommend this book as a guide on what to study but definitely not as the only source of study material.

Study Guide + Extra Tips

This was a great guide! Honestly, the SIFT is mostly logic and problem solving. I'm a Cadet studying Russian Language and Literature, never flew before, and barely skimmed through the FM for helicopter flight. It's not as difficult as I thought it would be. I only studied about four or five days for it because I was in a rush to turn in my packet. However, I'm pretty sure that without this guide I wouldn't have done nearly as well. If you're planning on taking the SIFT, buy this! Although keep in mind that there are some small grammar and spelling errors but nothing that should detract from the learning experience.
Section 1: Don't think, just click as fast as you can. It's free points so just capitalize on it. I was able to get them all, pretty sure I made a mistake on a few, but that didn't really hurt me.
Section 2: Honestly, if you spend more than 10 or 15 seconds on any, just guess and move on. There are easy and hard ones dispersed in between. Try to get through them. The SIFT study guide ones are easy as hell so they aren't a good indicator for you.
Section 3: Study, study, study. Again, this portion is more logical than you think. If your bird is going down and it has engaged autorotation, what do you do in order to not crash? Using base knowledge of flight controls, you should be able to answer it. But there are some questions that they rip right out of the book as well, so if you've really sat down for a week and did nothing but study the FM, you will pass with flying colors.
Section 4: The study guide was a HUGE help, pretty sure I got perfect on it. Bare in mind that the test itself has really terrible resolution for the planes so you have to look very carefully. Other than that, do the practices for this once, understand what it's teaching and you should be good.
Section 5: No way to study for this, just do your best. You can take some SAT practices, but take the practice test here, see what you did wrong and try to understand it.
Section 6: This is all you. If you stay for the full 40 minutes, you did well. If it cuts you off, then you either did perfect and it's moving on or you just failed too many times and it's given up on you. Logic, problem solving, basic arithmetic, with lots of high level algebra.
Section 7: The study guide is a perfect job at this, just study every law and principle that it says in here until you know it perfectly. Understand how all these affect a helicopter and you'll do fine.
Overall, this test is study-able, but most of it is your own ability to look outside the box. Nothing here is hand fed, it's a lot of intricate questions that you can use very basic knowledge to complete.
