I'd give this 6 stars if I could

The author writes very clearly, explaining technical ideas in understandable language.
As a new licensed ham operator, I've been overwhelmed by lots of detailed information about antennas, transceivers, antenna tuning, etc. Too many trees, too little forest. The author, Steve Ford, steps back to give the big picture about what's actually useful to consider when starting out: what's practical vs. what's overkill. What and where to buy without getting ripped off or getting something inappropriate for new operators. For instance, older HF equipment can be a bargain and work well, but it may frustrate new operators by requiring repair work and/or lots of fiddling to get it working.
Everyone new to HF (high frequency) ham radio should buy this book first before investing in equipment.

Good book...

I gave this book a 5 star rating. It's quite well written, as Steve Ford, WB8IMY, has proven he can do.
The chapter on antennas is similar in material to his previous book, "Small Antennas for Small Spaces". The rest of the book is fresh, new material written for new hams seeking guidance in setting up their first hf station. Good advice is there for those attracted to QRP: beef up the antenna and sharpen your cw skills to compensate for 5 watts. Good book. Recommended.

Great Info for the New HAM

Really good info I would strongly recommend it as soon as you get your Technician License so you can plan things out in advance and it also weeds out many of the questions you may have. Well written, easy to follow, and worth the money.
