A Poet of the Invisible World: A Novel, by Michael Golding

In the tradition of Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse comes a new spiritual novel that is a stunning feat of storytelling and imagination.

A Poet of the Invisible World follows a boy named Nouri, born in 13th-century Persia with four ears instead of two. Orphaned as an infant, he's taken into a Sufi order, where he meets an assortment of dervishes and is placed upon a path toward spiritual awakening. As he stumbles from one painful experience to the next, he grows into manhood. Each trial he endures shatters another obstacle within - and leads Nouri on toward transcendence.

A Fabulous Tale
By Roger Brunyate
Celestial light,
Shine inward… that I may see and tell
Of things invisible to mortal sight.
— John Milton

No matter how tired they were from the week's labor, no matter
how dull from too much baghali polo the night before, no
matter how eager to praise God or make tea or milk the cow,
there was no one in the tiny village of Al-Kashir who was not
stunned the news that early that morning, in the slant-roofed
shed behind the mud-walled house, Maleeh al-Morad had given
birth to a bright-faced, screaming boy with two sets of ears.
— Michael Golding

Golding's epigraph and his opening sentence. Like most epigraphs, the first is almost a riddle whose full meaning will appear only after you have finished the book. But I was immediately captivated by the fabulous tone of the opening sentence, like a fairy story set in some distant time and place, anchored by mundane details such as making the tea and milking the cow, but containing already that one piece of magic: the boy with four ears. I admit that in another state of mind I might have dismissed the writing as trivial fantasy, but on this occasion I was inspired to read on. And on, and on. For I quickly realized that Michael Golding was an author I could trust to lead me anywhere. This is one of those books that will leave you in suspense at the end of one chapter, only to resolve it by a stroke of grace at the start of the next. I don't mean that every problem has a happy outcome, although this was mostly the case at the beginning, but that even suffering and setbacks can lead eventually to greater wisdom.

For this is the story of a spiritual journey. By a miraculous accident, the baby Nouri Ahmad Mohammad ibn Mahsoud al-Morad (let's just say Nouri) literally falls into the hands of the porter of an order of dervishes, or Sufi monks. The porter, Habbib, tries to keep the baby secret, but eventually his presence is discovered, and the boy becomes a favorite of the brothers and grows up at the lodge. The leader of the order, Sheikh Bailiri, senses that Nouri is especially blessed by Allah and begins to train him in the Sufi discipline. He also notes the boy's remarkable fluency with words, and sets him on his path as a poet.

But these are troubled times (I am assuming sometime in the Middle Ages) and the idyll cannot last. When the lodge is raided by a band of marauders, Nouri is kidnapped and lands in a Sultan's court, where his gifts are again discovered but now shine in a different light. This is only the first of Nouri's many translocations during the course of the novel. He will find himself in Andalusia, in North Africa, on the Hajj to Mecca, and once more back in the village of his birth. Not all of these will be times of enlightenment or prosperity; there are periods when he will lose himself almost completely. But what held it together was the sense that everything was part of a journey to God: the jacket compares A POET to Hermann Hesse's SIDDHARTHA, and I can see what it means. But what am I doing, as a former Christian turned atheist, finding fascination in a search for God, especially in an Islamic context so removed from my own? Perhaps it is the radiant simplicity of Golding's prose. Perhaps the fact that the religion as he paints it has nothing to do with restriction and exclusion, only personal enlightenment. Perhaps the Sufi teaching that to know God one must first know oneself. This is a spiritual quest that even humanists can embrace.

Nouri will encounter many obstacles in his journey. Some are outside himself, such as the marauding kidnappers and a dark monk who establishes himself as his personal nemesis. But most are inside him, facts of his nature. One of these is his sexuality, for Nouri discovers that his deepest love is for men. In every important way, Golding treats gay love as something beautiful, even holy, but he also realizes that it can be something difficult to accept and lead to self-doubt and persecution.

Nouri's other inner obstacle is oddly enough his poetry, which emerges surely as a divine gift but which can also get in the way, as yet another veil between him and God. There is a wonderful episode early in the novel when Nouri must choose between his career as a poet and his religious studies; I felt it especially acutely as an artist myself. This particular dilemma is eventually decided for him in yet another act of violence that once more sets Nouri wandering around the Mediterranean. There will be periods in his life when Nouri does not write at all, others in which he is prolific. We never see his poems, but we do believe their quality. And, whether he writes or not, we never cease to believe that Nouri has the vision of a poet, and that it is as a poet he will come to see God. Only after reaching the end do I see the point of the word "inward" in the Milton epigraph:

Celestial light,
Shine inward… that I may see and tell
Of things invisible to mortal sight.

Loved this book
By Steve W
I loved this book! The author paints such vivid pictures, in such beautiful language, that I felt like I was part of Nouri’s journey. Not only did I envision the colorful locations, but I could practically taste the many foods mentioned (and described in a delightful food glossary). Woven into the seemingly serious subjects of spiritual and sexual awakening is a surprising streak of humor that had me laughing out loud here and there. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope you do too!

The visible world gives him hell
By Ralphe Wiggins
This is the story of a disabled (he has an extra set of ears) man whose spiritual life is a reaction to various people's mostly negative reactions to him. The way he reacts to the buffeting is fascinating and heart warming. Throughout his life, his awkward physical condition constantly leads to crises to which he must react without warning of their approach. This is a well-structured ode to being different.

** The Ultimate Boba Bubble Tea Guide ** Boba Bubble Tea is a relatively new type of tea, invented in Taiwan in the 1980s. The beverage itself is essentially milk tea or a fruit-flavored iced tea. The ingredient that turns regular flavored teas into "bubble teas" is the tapioca pearls. These fruity pearls sink to the bottom, but they cause bubbles of air to periodically escape and rise to the tea's surface. Bubble tea is popular for its fruity and sweet flavors. Not complete recipes
By Class and Sass
I LOVE bubble tea and this is a cute idea, but it was not executed well at all.

I got this as a digital book, so I can't speak for the paper copy, but some of the recipes were missing information. There are multiple recipes that included ingredients that were not listed in the directions - so you'd be left with a bunch of extra stuff that you set aside for apparently no reason. I'm sure you can figure it out, but it seems like a pretty huge oversight to me. It also never says how many ounces are in a serving, and one recipe says to put it in six cups but it's listed as 2-3 servings - nor how big these 'cups' are.

And I agree with some of the other reviewers stating that these just look like recipes that were copied and pasted from the internet. There is a TON of inconsistent measuring lingo happening, some recipes say cups, some 'cp', and some just 'c.' - and for tablespoons there were also 'tbsp' and 'TB' and sometimes the variation happens in the same recipe! Not to mention one random recipe that used grams and milliliters rather than cups and ounces (and didn't even mention boba in the ingredients list). Plus the boba was referred to in multiple ways, including 'tapioca pearls', 'dried tapioca pearls', 'tapioca pearly', 'pearl tapioca', 'tapioca balls', or just plain 'tapioca'.

In conclusion, it was sloppy, incomplete, and clearly unedited. I'll probably only be using it for a guideline for ideas, not as a recipe book.

Just another but terrible Internet recipe rip-off book.
By Judith Stephens
Encore filled this book with the same typo in EACH rip-off recipe -- "Boil 2 cups of water per cup of tapioca pearls in a saucepan over high heat and add the boba/ tapioca pearls; stir gently and cook until they star to float." I guess they don't understand the need for an editor even for rip-off recipes!

The same paragraph continues in almost all the recipes -- "Then turn down the heat and cook for another 12-15 minutes. Set aside and let it cool for at least 12-15 minutes. Prepare the simple sugar syrup: boil some water in a saucepan over high heat and add in 2 tbsp. sugar, stir frequently until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is syrupy. Set aside and let it cool."

The last direction is usually "Pour tea into a tall glass and add the boba. Serve with a wide straw and enjoy!" Sometimes they say to add milk and sweetener or ice. Not only thieves but lazy thieves!

Additional typos in this terrible book include "1 cup dried tapioca pearly" "1 cantaloupe, separate" "4 tbsp. Tapioca Balls" "1 cp. ice cubes" "add the bobaand the ice." And finally both "tbsp and TB" for tablespoon in the same recipe they stole from olivesfordinner.com.

The Kiwi Bubble Tea has NO kiwi in it but does have mint, basil, spinach, pineapple and mint leaves.

Encore Books can't be consistent with their recipe format because they copy the recipes from all over the Internet. That's why you get the different terms for the same item and different expressions of measurement. This proves they aren't anything but recipe copiers and not cooks or recipe developers by any means.

The initial information and directions for the "Simple Bubble Tea" are off thekitchn.com with a lot more detail about what you're doing and why. Plus the ingredient quantities are better and more sequentially accurate.

The basis of the different flavors, for the most part, is the type of tea you use as the base flavor. So "Jasmine Bubble Tea" is made with Jasmine Tea rather than the more common black tea. Go to theaimlesscook.com for Taiwanese bubble tea jasmine milk tea with boba (where this recipe resides and was born) for better directions without typos like ". . . until they star to float."

Hibiscus tea can be made from dried hibiscus petals you can buy by the bag at Mexican grocery stores. Or you can use tea bags. There's a variety of tea in bags these days so you can go crazy with your favorite flavor. Cook the large Asian tapioca pearls (they expand and change color when they absorb the tea water) add sweetener and/or milk of your choice and enjoy. Not exactly rocket science.

When explaining how to cook the tapioca pearls, Encore Books changed the ingredient from COOKED boba to "dried" which will be majorly significant. It helps if you know something about the subject matter of what you're copying so you can understand the significance of these mistakes. Poor formatting is lack of good editing, plain and simple.

Go to buzzfeed.com and you'll find 23 recipes for bubble teas with far better directions than these from this pilfering publisher Encore Books including some in this book. If that's not enough, just Google "bubble tea" or "boba tea" and you'll get a lot more sites with far better directions.

Thin for such big imaginations.
By Angie
Great book for any artist! My teen son enjoys making comic books. He's used notebooks for so long but when we gave him this; he really liked it. The only thing he mentioned to me which lead to giving it 4 stars is how thin the books is so he'll have to make a small comic story.

Great for aspiring artists who would be best at drawing larger pictures or want to be able to add lots of details. The boxes are very large, as pictured. I know my 10 year old will love it, but seems like fun for any age beginner.

The House of Morgan: An American Banking Dynasty and the Rise of Modern Finance, by Ron Chernow

Published to critical acclaim twenty years ago, and now considered a classic, The House of Morgan is the most ambitious history ever written about American finance. It is a rich, panoramic story of four generations of Morgans and the powerful, secretive firms they spawned, ones that would transform the modern financial world. Tracing the trajectory of J. P. Morgan’s empire from its obscure beginnings in Victorian London to the financial crisis of 1987, acclaimed author Ron Chernow paints a fascinating portrait of the family’s private saga and the rarefied world of the American and British elite in which they moved—a world that included Charles Lindbergh, Henry Ford, Franklin Roosevelt, Nancy Astor, and Winston Churchill. A masterpiece of financial history—it was awarded the 1990 National Book Award for Nonfiction and selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 Best Nonfiction Books of the Twentieth Century—The House of Morgan is a compelling account of a remarkable institution and the men who ran it, and an essential book for understanding the money and power behind the major historical events of the last 150 years.

J. P. Morgan Sr.'s close relationship with Teddy Roosevelt; his son Jack Morgan's clientele of governments, finance ministers and central banks; and the Morgan realm's split under New Deal legislation are examined in detail in this National Book Award winner. From Library Journal
Chernow vividly portrays the influence that the Morgan banks have had on the history of the Western economy since the late 18th century. The epic story of the development of the American industrial experience is inextricably related to the history of the Morgan banks. Though this fascinating story is virtually the same as that told by Kathleen Bunk in Morgan Grenfell 1838-1988 ( LJ 12/89), Chernow adds color and personality with an emphasis on the 20th-century development of the bank. Working with recently discovered Morgan archives, he reveals institutional details long hidden by the protective secrecy of the family. This superb history will be an important book. Review
Winner of the National Book Award

“As a portrait of finance, politics and the world of avarice and ambition on Wall Street, the book has the movement and tension of an epic novel. It is, quite simply, a tour de force.”—The New York Times Book Review

“As informative and entertaining a history, especially of the period from 1880 to 1930, as this reviewer has ever read . . . Nowhere has our tenuous financial system been better described than by Chernow.”—John Rothchild, Los Angeles Times Book Review

“Chernow deftly mixes biography with economics and explicates arcane matters of high finance with sparkling clarity. . . . A fascinating historical journey from Charles Dickens’ London to Tom Wolfe’s New York.”—David M. Kennedy, The Atlantic Monthly

“An astonishingly detailed and fascinating story of the Morgan banks and the men who have run them. Chernow uses his gift for description to bring out vividly the personalities of his principals.”—Don Keown, San Francisco Chronicle

“Epic . . . Chernow melds deep insights into the life and times of Morgan bankers over 150 years with the flow of world history and the growth of banking and finance. With rich detail and warmth, he brings to life the defunct species of gentleman banker.”—Bill Barnhart, Chicago Tribune

Possibly the best business history ever written
By A Customer
Ron Chernow's "The House of Morgan" is both an engaging history of the Morgan banks and a brilliant account of the growth of global finance from Victorian times through the late 1980's. It's every bit as enjoyable as Chernow's "The Warburgs," but provides a better analysis than the Warburg book of key business and political developments of the 20th century.
No one should be intimidated by this book's length or the complexity of its subject. Its pages are rich with lively portraits of the sometimes quirky men who ran the Morgan banks, the high and mighty of the world with whom they did business, and the world's many critics of such concentrated economic might. Pierpont and Jack Morgan and their successors at the top get the most detailed treatment, but figures as diverse as Brandeis, Mussolini, Lindbergh (the son-in-law of a top Morgan partner), Bryan, Theodore Roosevelt and Margaret Thatcher all play a part in the story, not to mention interesting but lesser-known figures like Ferdinand Pecora, Judge Harold Medina and central bankers from Britain, Germany, Italy and Japan.
As a backdrop to the Morgan saga, this book includes accounts of the main events of 20th-century financial history, such as the Panic of 1907, the creation of the Federal Reserve system, the Crash of 1929 and the depression and bank failures that followed it, the New Dealers' attack on banks led by Pecora that resulted in the Glass-Steagall Act and the separation of commercial banking from investment banking, and the rise of hostile takeovers, Eurodollars, petrodollars, Latin American lending, junk bonds and the securitization of debt, all refreshingly written for laymen rather than experts.
"The House of Morgan" has perhaps two overriding themes. The first is that as the years have passed, and the Morgan banks have faced increasing competition, the Morgan bankers' need to maintain their global preeminence has led them to take bigger and bigger risks. Some of these risks have resulted in large financial loss, but more often they have resulted in a loss of both public and customers' confidence, which has eroded the very preeminence that the banks seek to maintain. The second theme is that the top Morgan bankers have consistently underestimated the power of government to control what they do, and even make their lives miserable. From Pierpont on down, they have ignored government at their peril. It's almost a certainty that with the next big economic downturn, the Morgan banks will be attacked again, and I hope that Chernow will be on the scene to provide an account of it.

Amazing Achievement but Somewhat Uneven
By Sheryl L. Katz
Ron Chernow is truly awe-inspiring. This is one of several, incredibly complete biographies that he has written.

At 700 plus pages this is an incredibly long book. Unfortunately it is an uneven read. I became progressively less interested in the book as I went along; however, it was worth the effort to complete.

The first section, which he calls the Baronial Era in banking, is fascinating, and for me it was a page-turner. The Morgan banking house actually began as the George Peabody bank in England, and Junius Morgan was brought over from the US to be his successor. Junius Morgan took the bank to a level far beyond where Peabody had, and then his son JP Morgan Sr. took over. JP Morgan Sr (Pierpont) is the name most associated with Morgan banking, and he was an enormously powerful and colorful character. This was the infamous age of the "Robber Barons" the rise of American railroads, big steel, and the oil industry. Pierpont was at the center of it, commanding industry while collecting art, building yachts and cavorting with women. It makes a great story.

Pierpont was succeeded by his son JP Morgan Jr(Jack) who headed the bank during what Chernow called the "Diplomatic Era". The book became less interesting. Jack was nowhere near as colorful as his father, and his reign over the bank nowhere near as autocratic. Several other bankers, among them Dwight Morrow (father of Anne Morrow Lindbergh) were major players at the bank. The bank played a huge role on the international stage in this era, and while it had strong ties to England (and its sister bank Morgan Grenfall) it also helped finance the rise of the Nazis, Mussolini and the nationalists in Japan. This was also the period of the roaring twenties and the depression. The story told in the book is not quite as gripping because it doesn't hinge on a single character, but the events impacted and the role played by the bank were enough to keep me reading with interest and occassionally complete absorption.

The third era covered was the "Casino Era". As a result of the Glass Steagle Act, the bank split into Morgan Guarantee and Morgan Stanley. This section of the book also tells about the demise of Morgan Grenfall in England. This is essentially the modern era of banking where the investment bankers at Morgan Stanley and Morgan Grenfall became involved in takeover battles and modern securities. Morgan Guarantee became a fairly staid, and boring, commercial bank. This section of the book had the least interesting characters. I found it to be pretty dry. I have read several books about the various takeover battles, so this account, which was more of a survey, lacked the blood and drama of other accounts I have read.

Finally, from the perspective of 2005, the last section of the book, covering the most recent time period, feels a bit dated. I know more about what happened to both Morgan Guarantee and Morgan Stanley than Chernow knew when he wrote the book, so the very last few chapters felt out of date.

Overall it was also interesting to see the interaction between the history of the bank, and social history. The bank originally was very "white shoe", male and protestant. It hired its first Jewish banker in 1963. Pierpont and Jack were quite anti-Semitic. Yet, within its confines, the bank was also a meritocracy and afforded many of its employees entree into the upper classes.

Although, it can be a bit of a slog at times, if you are interested in the world of banking and finance, or the history of the 19th and 20th century, this is an excellent book.

Not all it's cracked up to be
By Randall Whitcomb
This book is enormous, and based on the gushing of some of the other reviewers, one wonders if they rate on quantity rather than quality. While it is a huge tome, and it should be considering the enormity of the subject, I repeatedly felt myself looking for more detail.
Chernow has a habit of putting a few details in, then glossing over the key points, and editorializing on his own to make the vignette correspond to his thesis. His thesis seems to be this: Morgan (whichever one) was a good man in a dirty business and his monopolistic tendancies were for the moral betterment of humanity. The broader thesis is that the banking titans have been cut down to size for the betterment of the average citizen.
Unfortunately I find much of this posturing nothing more than cheerleading for the rich establishment types that Chernow obviously reveres! He neglects to even mention Morgan's involvement with Nikola Tesla at Wardencliffe, yanking out Tesla's funding when it became clear to him that Tesla was working to provide free energy, not the kind that Morgan could monopolize. He leaves out much more as well, such as Morgan's rather shady involvement in Japan at the end of WW II with Herbert Hoover where they managed to gain preferential treatment in the re-emerging Japanese economy... in alliance with Japanese monopolists eager to preserve their power and control.
It is incredible how Chernow couches Morgan's ruthless monopolist tendancies in terms that make them sound like he was a benign visionary! His attack on the Glass-Steagall act is also certain to make him a darling of the bankers. I wish he had just presented the facts, and replaced his "apologies" with MORE facts!
At any rate, I learned from it, but I recommend viewing much of it with a very jaded eye.
