One hardly needs to reinterpret history to conclude that some of Henry VIII's wives were manipulated and victimized by a male-dominated society; most historians see that as a given. In her apparent determination to find something new under the sun, Lindsey sacrifices both objectivity and credibility. Virtually every important event is filtered through her feminist prism. Ann Boleyn may not have been the "great whore" of popular lore, but Lindsey's portrayal of her as a victim of sexual harassment on a grand scale is a bit much. Still, this book has value. In examining these women as flesh-and-blood humans rather than pawns in a chess game of power politics, Lindsey has performed a useful service. Her portrait of Henry's first and perhaps most tragic wife, Catherine of Aragon, is particularly poignant. This is a generally enjoyable and informative work, considering the self-imposed constraints the author worked under. Jay Freeman

Enjoyable read

This book was an enjoyable and easy read, I only wish Lindsey had chosen to add notes. She gave good reasons as to why she did not: "Because notes can distract the reader, and because this book focuses on reinterpretation of accepted facts rather than on disputing the facts themselves, I have avoided using notes." P.217
However I like to seperate out fact to have the option to form my own opinion.
There were points in the book where Lindsey made it clear that emotions or thoughts were being speculated about: "[Catherine] must have wondered, bitterly, if the new king of Scots would one day be king of England". However at other times it is not clear: "Jane Grey, miserably unhappy in her new marriage...was now queen." Without notes I'm wondering how we know Lady Grey was unhappy.
Karen Lindsey does offer me assistance with my thirst for knowledge; there is a good bibliography so I will do my own further reading. Overall an enjoyable read, with some excellent food for thought.

A Great Read

As a non-scholar, I don't know if the author's thesis holds up. However, she offers us a view of Henry that deserves to be heard. It's hard to argue with her view of each wife that is contrary to the presentation we are given. Her treatment of Anne Boleyn certainly makes us rethink this relationship and see Boleyn as she deserves to be seen: more as victim of a man she did not dare deny than a calculated seductress. As modern history and congenital story telling, the book certainly holds up quite well.

The title makes it sound like an author forcing 21st century feminism on the politics of 16th century life. It's nothing like that. Though there is interjection of feminism in certain fashions it it much more removed and speculative then trying to explain away actions of people who wouldn't even know the word. Feminists existed but in a society where men dominated every aspect of life they hardly knew what they were. This book attemps to say simply that be a simple recount of history. Good read especially for people who like a less academic language in their historical leisure reading.
