Gorgeous and inspiring book

Like the books of James Krenov, "The Soul of a Tree" is as much a book about philosophy as it is about wood. And it's a good philosophy: slow down, take your time, play with the wood, and enjoy it. The book is really about the soul of Nakashima. He outlines some of his own personal history and how he developed his ideas about craft. There's not really much on technique here - you can certainly find better books for that - but you won't find many more inspiring.

On a personal note I had a lady call me years ago to fix up `some old furniture' she and her husband had bought years ago (in the `50's I believe.) Seems when they were young college professors they found this young oriental guy down the road who made furniture in his garage. When I looked at the furniture I told her that her young oriental friend had become quite famous and showed her this book. She was flabbergasted. What she wanted me to do was to nail up some chairs that had worked loose over time. I refused, of course, and explained to her that these were valuable pieces that should be cared for properly. I also encouraged her to contact Nakashima's Conoid Studio (if it still existed) to let them catalogue the pieces. Even after years of use by a family with kids living in the sticks the pieces were obviously crafted with meticulous care and held up surprisingly well. It was a real joy to bring them back to daily use.

This man never wasted a single second of his life

George Nakashima was not only a master craftsman in his field, he was a genius. He could pick up any piece of wood and at a glance know what the end product would be to its full potential...and more.He would let the wood tell him. Even his simplest of projects 'sing' beauty and finesse. I bought the book for insperation to my own woodworking skills, and learnt much more than i expected. Included in the book is a short biography telling us of his early life, his travelings and how he ended up the man he became, his family, lifestyle, work and good natured beliefs. It certainly gave me insperation towards beautiful woodwork and i like to think I learnt a few lessons in life as well. If i was to me this man and only shake his hand I would feel honoured.......

A woodworking classic

Nakashima, a woodworker in the classic sense. Only wanted the tree to live on longer by working with and creating with it. This book is a great example of the love one can have for both nature and woodwork.
Any woodworker should have this book not on the shelf, but closer, to the workspace at all times.

A young pregnant woman dealing with cancer and chemotherapy tells us what that's like, in graphic novel form.

This short memoir written as a graphic novel is about Matilda Tristram during her not-so-average pregnancy. I say not-so-average because she found out she had colon cancer during her pregnancy and had surgery to remove the tumor. That surgery left her with a (possibly reversable) colostomy bag and a need for 6 months of chemotherapy.

Ms. Tristam is very open and honest with what she experiences and really gets across just how traumatic and difficult it was for her during her treatment. By keeping an ongoing diary of sorts about what she was feeling both emotionally and physically and we are able to share her fears and her ups and downs. She can go from weepy to happy, from pessimistic to optimistic in short order. She describes her dreams (often nightmares) which give us more insight as to what she's going through and how she (and really anyone) would process it.

I had a similar (yet different) surgery myself this year and I was very interested to read this book. Luckily, I was not pregnant and I can only imagine how much worse this all would have been. Still, I think many people who have gone through these kinds of life-changing experiences really go through a type of PTSD, especially if what happened was unexpected and sudden and required big surgeries and lengthly hospital stays.

I thought Ms. Tristram really nailed the anxiety and everyday thoughts that someone going through what she did would experience and she is able to do so with wit and humor. I am envious of writers who are able to stand back and observe their own experiences and then so eloquently write about them, and that's what she's able to do.

Really a terrific book. I am not usually a fan of graphic novels but this memoir really lends itself to that form.

Note - if you're going to read this book in eBook form as I did, I would recommend getting it on a device that would show the illustrations in color. I read this book on my iPad via the Kindle application and it was great.

Margaret Phelan, Barrister at Renaissance Chambers,James Gillespie, Retired Barrister

Margaret Phelan sits as a tribunal judge in the First-tier Tribunal. She has edited the Immigration Law Handbook since the first edition.


James Gillespie practised as a barrister specialising in immigration, asylum, and nationality law for 16 years before retiring from the bar in 2009. He has also taught and lectured widely on immigration law. During his years of practice he was recognised as one of the leading practitioners in the field of immigration law by the Chambers and Partners Guide to the UK Legal Professions. Prior to going to the bar he spent 7 years working for the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, advising on immigration law and representing clients in immigration appeals. He was a founder member of the Immigration Law Practitioners Association and served on its executive committee until 1992.

Margaret Phelan and James Gillespie have produced what Blake J has described as a ‘trusted and indispensable source’ of reference for materials on Immigration and Asylum Law. Published by the Oxford University Press, this is the new ninth edition of a long established and highly regarded work, which, in one substantial volume, of almost 2,000 pages, provides all the key materials required by the busy immigration law practitioner who needs to stay up to date with all recent developments -- – and these are considerable. There have been some twenty-one Statements of Changes to the Immigration Rules since the last edition of this book, as the authors point out.

Certainly there have been substantial changes to existing legislation brought about by the Immigration Act 2014, which, as the authors also point out, introduces new restrictions on access to housing, as well as other facilities and services. It has also wrought significant changes to the existing law affecting detention, enforcement, marriage, deprivation of citizenship and more besides. Note that the text of the Immigration Act 2014 is contained in this volume, together with the resulting changes to existing legislation, notably the Immigration Act 1971 and the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002.

Also included are the Immigration Rules (revised to incorporate changes announced in October 2014)…. new EU regulations… new Procedure Rules for the First-tier Tribunal… Procedure Rules for the Upper Tribunal… and changes to EEA regulations.

As global considerations are now of prime importance in this area of law, it is most useful for practitioners that the Handbook also contains, in addition to European Materials and Statutory Instruments, a section of almost 300 pages of International Materials, in particular the UNHCR Handbook on Procedures and Criteria for determining Refugee Status, which provides the most recent guidance on refugee claims. The Convention on Rights of the Child -- and other conventions on human rights, torture, and stateless persons -- are included in this section.

It is important to emphasize that one of the major strengths of this Handbook is that it covers both recent new legislation and the existing legislation that precedes it. The result is a highly efficient and reliable reference tool for Asylum and Immigration Tribunal judges and of course, barristers, solicitors and other advisers practising in the areas of immigration, asylum and human rights law. Well written introduction to Nutrition Therapy

Although this book was copyrighted ten years ago (1996), the information about nutrition and nutrition therapy is still applicable. This is a good introductory book and an easy read as well. I like this book because it is formatted like a textbook: it has keyterms and objectives at the start of the chapter. The topics are discussed individually under a heading and topics are outlined clearly which saves reading time. The book has tables, figures, photos, case studies, and displays (highlighted and useful information about a topic, for example, "safety guidelines for microwave cooking", etc. At the end of each chapter, it has keys to practical application, key ideas, and study-discussion questions.

I am not a nutritionist nor dietician, but this book explains many advanced concepts in a way that I can understand and apply to my own life. Not a book for begginers

At the time I bought this book, it was the only one available in my local bookstore. I had a project that required me to write a VxD in less than a month, and having never written a VxD, I hoped that this book would gain me quick and dirty insight into the basics of writting one. I found it extremely difficult to follow with not enough explanations of the basics. It seemed to be written for the x86 expert who had already written numerous other types of drivers. I was forced to reread it numerous times while researching other sources of information so that I could understand. There is too much appendix, and not enough examples. It is also chalked full of little annoying typos. The project presented by the author should have been more verbose in the explanantions - I sure would have appreciated it at the time.

Rosemary Heim painted a delightful heroine with her Angel. I enjoyed the savvy bounty hunter's ability to change her speech patterns and appearance to suit the situation. She's matched up with an equally interesting hero--a mysterious, manly guy. Ms. Heim takes the reader on a fun cat and mouse game, where both their lives and hearts hang in the balance. Enjoyable!

About the Author
Andy Jones is an experienced Military Intelligence Analyst and Information Technology Security specialist. He has had considerable experience in the analysis of Intelligence material in Strategic, Tactical and Counter-Insurgency operations and a wide range of Information systems management experience. In addition, he has considerable experience in the security of Information Technology systems, having been responsible for the implementation of Information Technology security within all areas of the British Army and in some joint service organizations. He has directed both Intelligence and Security operations and briefed the results at the highest level. He was awarded the MBE for his work during his service in Northern Ireland and has gained an Open University Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and technology and a Masters degree in Information Security and Computer Crime from the University of Glamorgan. After completing 25 years service with the British Army’s Intelligence Corps, he moved into the area of defense research and was employed as the manager of a group of 80 research scientists and as a researcher and analyst in the area of Information Security. He has also had experience as a project manager within defense research for the security aspects of a number of large projects and has gained considerable expertise on the criminal and terrorist aspects of Information Security. He has undertaken a range of research into a number of aspects of Information warfare and the threats to information systems. 1n 2002 he co-authored a book on information warfare and is currently researching to write a book on the risks to information systems. In addition to his main work as a senior lecturer on Information Security and Computer Crime at the University of Glamorgan, he is currently also an associate lecturer for the Open University on Internet communications. His primary area of research for the last two years has been into methods for the measurement of t

Debi has a well-developed set of "soft" consultancy skills and experience developed by her formal education in the Arts and subsequent experience as a lecturer and advisor to students in colleges of further education. She has built on this so as to develop a set of IT skills through additional training with Birmingham University. Moreover she has deployed these skills to good effect in both civil and military consulting assignments. In this latter phase Debi's M.Sc. work was directed at investigating issues of system lifecycle security under DERA (now QinetiQ) sponsorship. Debi has also led the development and application of security risk analysis techniques within the Trusted Information Management Department at QinetiQ. She was previously the Head of Professional Services in the Trusted Information Management department at QinetiQ, the privatised element of what was previously the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency and is currently a Senior Research Fellow in Information Assurance at the Royal Military College of Science, Cranfield University.

Best Risk Management book on the market today!

There are many books on the market dealing with risk management as part of InfoSec. So, I wasn't sure that this one would be better, or provide any new information. I was first surprised to find it written in a non-techie way. That means the information is easy to read and more importantly, easy to understand. Also, because it is written by two authors from the UK, it offers a slightly different look than what has been written on the topic by numerous U.S. authors.

What I especially liked about this book is that it not only dealt with all of today's relative risk management issues but the section on "The Threat Assessment Process" was really well done. Often this is not given the importance it deserves as other authors concentrated on the risks. However, one must know the enemies to defend again them. This part was a nice surprise.

So for today's professional whose experience is vast or limited, this book offers all you need to know about risk manaagement as it relates to InfoSec - or "Computer Security" as the authors call it.
