A step down from the 1st edition...

I've used this textbook in both the first and second edition, but have decided that I won't use it again.

I generally liked the first edition, but this second edition was inferior. First, the CD-ROM with the primary readings has been made more difficult to use. Many of the entries no longer open a text box on the screen but take you to a website with numerous options, making the precise reading assignments difficult to find unless you want to assign the whole text of something really long. Besides, if all these primary sources are already on the internet, why should we all pay extra to buy the CD-ROM?

Second, the book is organized in a confusing way. As someone who likes to teach the development of Western philosophy from Ancient Greece until today, there was no straightforward way to teach this. You have to jump around topic to topic. (OK, I acknowledge that some people like the topical approach so maybe this is just a personal perference)

Third, it is pretty obvious from reading the book which views the author prefers. I consider this to be inappropriate in an intro level book.

So, while there are some good things about the book such as its attempted breadth, I'll be using something else next time.

A Fun Read...

The 2nd Edition is riddled with typos, about one every two pages. This is annoying because they tend to appear right in a sentence where the author is driving home a point or asking a critical question.

Aside from that, it's a fun read, but some sections are far beyond the reading comprehension of beginning college students. At times, the author makes better sense of a long passage with his remarks and synthesis, while the context of the excerpts sometimes just do not come together.

I have to commend the author for picking some "choice" images for the margins to keep a sleepy reader alert. These include: the gradation of skin color changes over Michael Jackson's career span, death photos of Malcolm X, people picking through garbage, planes flying into the twin towers, etc.. I get the sense that the author is a cynical yet intelligent man, which is why the book works for me regardless of typos and small context issues.

Decent but not a great read

I read this for enjoyment, not for a class. I found the topics suited to an entry-level philosophy student, but for this purpose it does a good job of explaining the central viewpoints from which philosophers can approach a subject.

That said, these types of entry-level books are better when they include a chronological approach to philosophy. I saw jumps between topics and even within topics which seemed to ignore hundreds of years of thinking and debate.

As a cursory overview, this book delivers. As a middle-level book, the writing begins to falter. Seasoned philosophers will probably want to stay away from this one.

The principles are similar. We ask lots of questions; not just any sort of question, but questions that inquire into what people are proud of, what has created energy, joy and life in the school and then asking what skills and abilities have been used in achieving this. This sort of conversation generates trusting, hope-full and energised relationships, which create possibilities and opportunities for joint shared futures. What has emerged has been exciting and innovative but totally unpredictable and different in each context. It has emerged from positive conversations and new positive energy, and different sorts of relationships where trust and collaboration naturally occur. This has created a very different atmosphere in the school with an appreciative, enthusiastic quality about it. New and different futures are created for the children, teachers and school through questioning in these ways. Any comments or statements, which in the past might have been negative, have been reframed and the positive qualities in the behaviours stated instead. In this way all the relationships between people are nurtured affirmatively, creating more possibilities for the future. For children, being appreciated and valued is grounding for their future. Within the relational space trust, empathy, care, joy, understanding, and so much more emerge. Learning grows through their curiosity and opportunities for the future increase. Yet more ... as we share our experiences, we will talk about different things that we have done in a variety of situations and how we have learned through these events. This is a book about skills and abilities that we have found have given us, as workers with children and their networks, possibilities to co-create multiple realities, to open up different ways of acting.

About the Author
Sharon Lohr (Ph.D. in statistics, University of Wisconsin-Madison) is the Thompson Industries Dean's Distinguished Professor of Statistics at Arizona State University, where she has taught since 1990. Dr. Lohr's research focuses on survey sampling, design of experiments, and applications of statistics to social sciences and education. She has published numerous articles in journals including The Annals of Statistics, Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Biometrika, Journal of Quantitative Criminology, Wisconsin Law Review, and The American Statistician. She has served as chair of the Survey Research Methods Section of the American Statistical Association, president of the Arizona Chapter of the American Statistical Association, Fellow of the American Statistical Association, Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute, and member of the Census Advisory Committee of Professional Associations and the Statistics Canada Advisory Board on Statistical Methodology. In 2003 she received the inaugural Gertrude M. Cox Award from the Washington Statistical Society and in 2009 was selected to present the Morris Hansen Lecture.

nice introduction to survey sampling

For me the classic book on survey sampling is Cochran's. The second edition of Cochran was published in 1977 and there have been many advances since including the use of superpopulation models. Lohr provides the basic concepts first followed with many exercises at the end of the chapters. It is designed for a first course which could be taken by statistics majors or undergraduates in fields that use survey sampling such as business, sociology, psychology or biology. Many real surveys are presented and the standard topics (e.g. stratified and cluster sampling) are covered. Issues of nonresponse are also discussed. Chapter 12 covers topics not commonly seen in survey sampling texts including two-phase sampling and capture-recapture analysis. Warner's method of randomized response to deal with sensitive questionnaires is also covered in Chapter 12. It is also unusual in that it provides a great deal of coverage of resampling methods to estimate variance components including the bootstrap, jackknife and balanced repeated replicates. It also deals with regression and logistic regression in problems involving complex survey data. Missing data issues are also discussed as are imputation methods The book contains a many references to the literature and also includes a CD ROM with some data sets and a software program called SURVEY.

excellent sampling textbook

this is an excellent book on sampling. it accommadates all reader levels (undergrad, graduate, practioner and theorist). i can't comment too much about the theoretical aspects of the book because that is not my focus. but for those who want to learn about sampling and use it for their jobs or school projects, i cannot think of a better text. i find myself referring to the text constantly. her examples are relatively clear and easy to follow, in my opinion. she covers cluster sampling and complex surveys (variance calculations) in depth and with great clarity.

A well-written guide to sampling design and analysis.

Sharon Lohr does a great job of covering the subject of sampling, which seems to be overlooked in most curricula even though the need for it is ubiquitous across disciplines. This text is appropriate at an intermediate level such as third or fourth year undergraduate or first-year graduate study. The math notation appears to be an attempt to bridge between the notation used at the introductory level and that which appears in graduate texts such as Greene. I found it relatively easy to follow, but it might not be so easy for someone who is seeing it for the first time. The best feature of the book is its comprehensive coverage of the subject. If you have a question about sampling, there is likely a concise and understandable answer available in this text.

About the Author
Bill Christophersen was born and raised in the Bronx. He attended Columbia University, where he studied poetry with Kenneth Koch, Jill Hoffman and David Shapiro and received a Ph.D. in American literature. His poems have won awards from Kansas Quarterly and The Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation and been nominated several times for a Pushcart Prize, as well as for inclusion in Best New Poets. His book reviews and critical essays on poetry have appeared in Newsweek, The New York Times Book Review, The American Book Review, Poetry, Shenandoah and elsewhere. The author of The Apparition in the Glass: Charles Brockden Brown’s American Gothic (University of Georgia Press), he lives and works in New York and plays traditional and bluegrass fiddle.

Scraps Into Art -- Poetry by Bill Christophersen

Some poets are good at conveying the menace of the city, the dangers of life. Others pull back into a contemplative, pastoral calm. Bill Christophersen’s great challenge is to give us both at once. The title poem, “Two Men Fighting in a Landscape” sums it up: A bloody battle in the foreground, dawn breaking silently on the horizon. As the Incredible String Band put it, it’s a “troubled voyage in calm weather.”

In “Streetscape with Blazing Locusts,” the poet tells us that he lives on a mean street, on the edge of Harlem, where not long ago he was held up at gunpoint and lost his front teeth in the ensuing struggle. Despite friends’ entreaties, he declines to move, attached as he is to the beauty of his surroundings. This he finds on the pavement on a brilliant day after a Halloween rainstorm, when the “..broken sidewalk squares of run-down side streets/ mimic stained-glass windows for a couple of hours.”

“The Bee-Loud Glade,” is a takeoff on Yeats’s “Lake Isle of Innisfree.”

“I should arise and go now; but
Something roots me here:
paralysis of purpose? striped
chemistry of fear?

No oracle but this hornet’s nest
whose dark eye stares me down.
A poet is a fool. I’ll
Take my chances in the town.”

This city-country theme is just the surface of a collection that tackles the deepest questions of life, again and again in dialogue with poets and poetry, past and present. Robert Frost says free verse is like tennis with the net down. Writing with the net up, Bill defends free verse in his own terms – formal poetry is like swimming in lanes, free verse bodysurfing in the ocean.

A chance encounter with Galway Kinnell leads to decades of meditation on the art and craft of poetry, and the gift of a poem to the master.

Full disclosure: Bill Christophersen has been a close friend of mine for nearly forty years, a twin fiddler and fellow scribe. I love the guy, but it took reading this book to fully appreciate him. His greatest talent is to take scraps of things and fashion them into works of art – see his solo recording of fiddle tunes “Hell and High Water.” That’s what he does in this collection, divided into four parts. “”Old Movies” is about growing up in the Bronx; “Walks of Life” his observations of surfers, fishermen, comics, copy editors, high rollers, runners and best of all – ironworkers in a skyscraper, eating lunch on a girder 69 floors up, walking the iron planks where, like everywhere, “the only peace we know is contingent..” “Flight Patterns” pulls back and tries to take in the panorama of life and death on earth. And the last section, “Two Men Fighting in a Landscape,” peeks into eternity, sees Jacob wrestling God to a draw, and wants to know “what’s the take-away?”
He caps it all with a stunning epilogue, reaching all the way back to the origins of English poetry: a translation from Anglo-Saxon of “The Wanderer.” The hero is a lonely vagabond, wracked with cares, making his way through a landscape of loss, keeping his cares locked away in “soul’s strongbox.” And the very last sentence of a poem -- of a book -- lashed with doubts and fears, is a simple affirmation of faith.

A Fine Collection from a Poet Who Deserves More Attention

This is a terrific collection of poetry. It is smart but never self-impressed. It uses language in ways that are wonderfully full in their imagery. Some of the poems take a couple readings to work through the layers Mr. Christophersen paints one upon another. Many of the poems are full of wit and a quietly self-deprecating tone. I would find it hard to list my favorites in this varied and diverse collection. Every poem was interesting. Every poem was fun to read even when delivering an emotionally strong and sometimes disturbing impact. If you love poetry you'll love this book. If you don't like poetry this one might possibly change how you feel. I recommend it heartily.
