Armstrong's second biography of Islam's prophet is lucid and stylish, never condescending. It puts the best face possible on its subject. The Muhammad it projects gave his followers "a mission: to create a just and decent society, in which all members were treated with respect." Moreover, Armstrong's Muhammad behaved justly and decently while he lived, though perhaps a bit according to the stringent standards of Arab culture at the time. He taught tolerance toward Jews and Christians. Never mind--Armstrong doesn't--about denials of civil equality to non-Muslims and fulminations about them as "infidels." The Jewish clan whose men were exterminated after a particular battle? It wasn't that they were Jews but that they were traitors, and it wasn't Muhammad who decided they should be executed. The fact that, after declaring that Muslim men could have no more than four wives, Muhammad himself exceeded the limit? Hey, a leader has to make alliances with other groups. A nicely written book, but don't let it be the only biography of Muhammad you read. Ray Olson

What a fabulous piece of research and writing! Reading this book has expanded my understanding of Islam and the Prophet in huge ways, far beyond the fear-producing aspects promoted so often these days and to which I'd reluctantly fallen prey. How can anyone have real knowledge of the historical record and not realize that Muhammad's words for his people have broad applicability to many of the social problems that face us now in the western world? Karen Armstrong's book is a blessing for those who have the willingness to read it. This book has the ability to open minds and hearts to the beauty and truth at the Source of one of the world's great religions. Thank you, Karen.

This is the second edition of Credit Scoring For Risk Managers: The Handbook for Lenders. Like the first edition, it was written for bankers and other consumer lenders who need a clear understanding of how to use credit scoring effectively throughout the loan life cycle. In today's financial system, scoring is used by virtually all lenders for all types of consumer lending assets, making it vitally important that risk managers understand how to manage and monitor scores and how to set policies for their use. This edition is substantially different from the first edition published in 2004. The world's economies have been through a major financial crisis and severe recession and some have questioned the role and value of models and scores used by lenders in the years leading up to the U.S. housing collapse and economic downturn. We have devoted a significant portion of the book to topics relevant to ensuring scorecards are properly managed through volatile environments and controlling the risk of using credit scores for decision-making. Ten of the book’s sixteen chapters are new. Many focus on scorecard management practices and on controlling model risk. Score management refers to all the activities model managers and users engage in after the scorecard is developed. These include setting proper lending policies to use in conjunction with the score, periodic back-testing and validation, and remediation of any issues that may arise related to scorecard performance. Chapter 4 takes the reader step by step through a scorecard development project and discusses best practices for managing and documenting scorecard projects to increase the transparency of the performance, assumptions and limitations of scoring models. The last three chapters are devoted to the important topic of score model governance. Chapter 14 describes how to design a model governance framework to ensure credit scoring models are properly developed, used and validated on an on-going basis. Chapter 15 is focused on model monitoring and back-testing and describes a set of reports lenders should create and review to ensure their scorecards are performing well. Independent review of risk models by a third-party model expert is an important part of sound model governance. In Chapter 16 we describe how to carry out a thorough independent model review. Other chapters focus on new material not covered in the previous edition including types of data that are used as predictive information in scores (Chapter 3), fair lending analysis of scorecards and the creation of adverse action reasons (Chapter 11), the use of scores as components of other models (Chapter 10), common scoring mistakes to avoid (Chapter 12) and the important topic of reject inference (Chapter 9).

Perfect Oversight Tool for Credit Scoring

WOW, what a great book. It is `spot on' for so many credit scoring topics. It is well written and an absolute delight to read, excellent examples of charts/diagrams/reports with great explanations. I especially liked the commentary on lessons from a financial crisis and observations about how it occurred and action steps that could be taken to avoid it in the future. Good discussions regarding Effective Risk Model Governance Programs.

About the Author
Vincent Kaminski is currently an adjunct professor at Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management at Rice University. Prior to returning to academic life, he served as senior vice president of commercial analytics at Reliant Resources, Inc. in Houston, Texas. Before joining Reliant, Vincent was a managing director of Citadel Investment Group LLC and between 1992-2002, was the head of the quantitative modelling group at Enron Corp. From 1986-1992 he was vice-president in the research department, Bond Portfolio Analysis Group, of Salomon Brothers in New York. Vincent serves on the Executive Committee of the Global Energy Management Institute at Bauer College of Business, University of Houston and was awarded "Energy Risk Manager of the Year", in the James H. McGraw award, in 1999. His published work includes: The US Power Market, (Risk Books: London) and Energy Derivatives: Pricing and Risk Management (Lacima Publications, London). Vincent holds an MS in international economics, a PhD in theoretical economics from the Main School of Planning and Statistics in Warsaw, Poland, and an MBA from Fordham University in New York.

One hell of a first novel: not for the weak at heart!

This book grabbed me by the throat by about chapter three or four and wouldn't let go. There are books that matter to me because the language captures me and I want to read aloud the phrases I love most...there are books that matter to me because I can't put them down...and there are books that matter to me because they make me feel lost in the world they create. This one was all three. I was so deeply entrenched that when I got to an upsetting part (it's horror meets dark fantasy) I was literally furious with the author for maybe a day until I was removed enough to remember that it is FICTION and that nothing bad had actually happened. To me, that's quite an artistic accomplishment! This is the first in a trilogy and I can't wait for the next two.

Soolie Beetch and the Dying Light is enthralling, engaging and impossible to put down. I had to read it twice, once just because I could not sleep without finding out what happens next, and the second to really let myself sink into the amazing story. This book is fantasy-fiction at it's very finest. The world is exquisitely crafted, and yet the characters are heartbreakingly real in every sense. It is everything I want in a book; intense, sweet, sad, funny, horrifying, and an escape. Not for the faint of heart (things gets *dark*) this book is a superb first novel, and I honestly don't know if I can wait for the series to continue.

Worth it, want more!

As a avid reader, I go through a lot of books over the course of the year. This book is a stand out. Imaginative with great descriptions the writer gave me characters I felt I could relate to and care about, a rarity. Soolie is strong and trying to protect those she loves while trying to survive. The world the author has created is described in such a way I had no trouble seeing it and being there, with none of the jarring inconsistencies some other popular authors through out because they didn't take the time to research their devices to find out if it would really work like that or not. Recommended.

Not what i was looking for

Before you buy, read this.
The story is about kids with mental illness and furries. The description should have mentioned that.

The content of the story was not very realistic. The way the author writes about the disabled characters is unbelievable, it almost makes you want to hate them. I have a mental problem of my own and know what it is like, but I felt a bit offended when I read the story.

Good concept but...
Bad writing. Things dont fit together well. Sometimes it seemed like one person was talking but they used the wrong name. Things were spelled wrong. Names were too similar, so when you moved between stories you couldnt tell if it was the same people. If this had been more than a dollar I would have demanded my money back.

Best Available - Wish there were more

I use this text extensively in my woodwind class. The double reed sections are excellent. The saxophone section is fine, but a bit short on information. There are several inaccuracies in the flute section (scientific, historical), and our flute professor disagrees with the information on embouchure and technique. The clarinet section is also weak. The author has some strange ideas on teaching embouchure and other skills, and there are inaccuracies within this section as well.

I use this and have students make corrections and notes in their copies of this book since there is nothing better available. I would like to see an updated version with corrections made and more consistent organization of material for each of the woodwinds. I would also like to see the illustrations revised so that they are more accurate. (I like a lot of the information in the Westphal book that is its competitor, but the Westphal is dense reading and very, very old.)

Update: December 2010. Don't teach woodwind pedagogy at the moment, but I did replace this book with readings from various sources when I was teaching it in the spring. I was tired of the limitations of this book. There are two newer books on the market I recommend that might meet your needs:

Fine Overview, with few inaccuracies

Woodwind players are much like trumpet players' about their mouthpieces, or violinists' about their strings....each has an opinion. The separate authors who write the wwodwind chapters, also have their opinions, a few tricks and techniques that are not mainstream, but clearly would work for most people. The best Woodwind Technque book on the market.
