A Must Read for MBAs and Entrepreneurs!

I became aware of this title by taking the Wharton: Marketing class on Coursera, the free MOOC learning site. Professor Kahn teaches the first three weeks of the nine week class and she does a super job. She's very engaging, passionate and animated - simply a great teacher. An excerpt of this book was offered as part of the class and I decided to purchase the full title. Just like the class, the book is wonderful. I bought the Kindle edition - you cannot beat the price for the educational and entertainment value.

Definitely will be using as a teaching tool

I was also introduced to Professor Kahn through the Coursera "Intro to Marketing" course, offered in conjunction with Wharton. Kahn, along with two other professor colleague, made marketing come alive! I have the pleasure of teaching marketing at the University level, and the online course and, further, her book, "Global Brand Power", provide me with both refreshers and some new ideas for passing along to my students.

Educated in part by French nuns, she was involved early on in her life with Communist Party youth organizations and children's groups. Since moving to Paris in the 1960s, Kristeva has risen in stature in intellectual circles so that she is now regarded as one of the most important thinkers of the contemporary era. EXTRACT FROM CHAPTER 7: “JULIA KRISTEVA'S THEORY OF LOVE”: For Julia Kristeva, love embodies both the semiotic and the symbolic, both knowledge and joy (pace Baruch de Spinoza), both language and affect. Kristeva has written of love in a way that is not facile, demeaning, banal, stereotypical, sexist or pornographic. Her pronouncements on love are quite different from those in the ‘classic' texts of love, such as Ovid's poems, or the mediaeval Art of Love, or Elizabethan sonnet sequences, or Stendhal's De l'Amour, or Denis de Rougement’s L’Amour et l’occident (Love in the Western World). When Kristeva writes - Vertigo of identity, vertigo of words: love, of the individual, is that sudden revelation, that irremediable cataclysm, of which one speaks only after the fact. Under its sway, one does not speak of. (“In Praise of Love”) - it seems right and thankfully free of the usual embarrassment of chauvinism that marks much writing about love. Julia Kristeva evokes the wildness of love, the loss of self and the eruption of desire, without sounding idiotic. When Kristeva writes that in love one assumes the right to be extraordinary, it is a great description of being in love. Kristeva is right to describe love as the inrush of total subjectivity, an infinity of subjectivity. In Kristeva’s psycho-poetic reading, love’s the inrush of the totally extraordinary, but at the expense of commonsense (as lovers learn, painfully): Love is the time and space in which “I” assumes the right to be extraordinary. Sovereign yet not individual. Divisible, lost, annihilated; but also, and through imaginary fusion with the loved one, equal to the infinite space of superhuman psychism. Paranoid? I am, in love, at the zenith of subjectivity. How great this first chapter of Histoires d’amour is, as great as Stendhal’s De l’Amour or Sigmund Freud’s The Ego and the Id, or Jacques Lacan’s �crits. Kristeva describes love as a transgressive, sometimes violent wildness (D.H. Lawrence’s term 'infinite sensual violence' is apposite here). Julia Kristeva is a French philosopher and feminist writer who has produced a huge body of work, going back to the 1960s. She is a remarkable thinker by any standards, but some of her ideas can be a little tricky and avant garde to grasp at first (the chora, the semiotic realm, the abject, etc). This book by Kelly Ives I found useful because it was clearly written, unlike too much of contemporary theoretical criticism. Ives steers clear of using jargon for the sake of it, or for showing off to other cultural critics. I mean, there are people who write about Kristeva who seem to be complicated for the sake of it, and there's no need for that (and no time for it either!).
And although Kristeva's work can be dense at times, her ideas are definitely worth pursuing. I particularly enjoy her writings on love and emotion (collected in her book Tales of Love). Kristeva has some truly extraordinary things to say about love - quite individual, quite unlike any other writer on love and feelings, but very illuminating.
As well as love, Kristeva has also written extensively about art and the artist - especially valuable are her views on the relation of making art to depression and heightened emotions. This book also explores these fascinating ideas, which say so much about being an artist - about the costs and the problems of being an artist, as wel as the joys and achievements.

An instant class in education research

I am surprised at the lack of reviews for this seminal work in education theory, although price might be a factor. In my opinion, this book is worth every cent! The principal cognitive load theory (CLT) research for the last 35 years has been done by John Sweller (author 1). His work is solidly based on scientific research and he clearly identifies areas that are hypothetical, how they have been tested to date, and what the results were. Constructivist educators will not like this book, because it does not take a constructivist approach at all. Personally, I liked the hard science and the lack of hand waving, a syndrome present in far too many educational tomes purporting to reflect meaningful research. I am currently implementing modifications to teaching presentation in my own classroom, based on this book and one he wrote with Ruth Colvin Clark. Some ideas: worked examples with "fading," eliminate split attention, reduce extraneous cognitive load, and more. In addition, CLT approaches should help with special education students and my bleary-eyed computer science kids. Try it, you'll like it

Yannick Lefebvre

Yannick Lefebvre is a plugin developer who has published eight projects to the official WordPress repository. His first creation, Link Library, has been used on hundreds of sites around the world. With a background in computer science and working for Presagis, a company providing software tools in the modeling and simulation industry, Yannick started writing plugins for his own WordPress site in 2004 and quickly shared his creations with the community. Yannick is actively involved in the Montreal WordPress community and has presented multiple times at WordCamp Montreal. Great book for beginners

Book is split into 11 chapters, each one containing recipes. First chapter deals with setup of development environment (under Windows with SVN and using Netbeans for coding). Second chapter introduces basic WordPress framework concepts (hooks, shortcodes...). Third chapter is dealing with plugin settings and administration interface. Next two chapters deal with custom post types and working with page and post templates. Chapter 6 is continue using custom post type to handle user submissions.

Next chapter deals with mySQL tables and working with data from it in the plugin. JavaScript, jQuery and AJAX got one chapter. And Chapter 9 is dedicated to widgets, with Chapter 10 containing recipes on internationalization of the plugin. Last chapter will help you submit your (free) plugin to WordPress.org repository.

Each recipe is listing step-by-step instructions what to do and gives you detailed explanation on how it all works, including screenshots when needed. It is really easy to follow and replicate. Chapters 3, 4 and 9 are overall best chapters.

First chapter is something this book can do without, and it would be better to have added more WordPress specific recipes than including most of the recipes from first chapter that offer only partial information on things that are not WordPress related. Setting up SVN (or other similar systems) is much bigger topic than it might look from this book.

But, my biggest negative point is that it only mentions object-oriented approach in one recipe and that continues to use functions only. It would have been much better to use each recipe to build on top of one plugin, and to give it proper files/directories structure, classes for different elements. I guess author wanted to have each recipe presented on its own.

Space given to JavaScript, AJAX and jQuery should be bigger with better examples on how to load JavaScript files and to avoid conflicts with other plugins using JavaScript on admin side. Also, book shows how to use outdated ThickBox control, that is being replaced with other solutions since WordPress 3.4, and it would be better to skip that recipe.

I don't have any other complaints about the content, and I am sure that it would be very useful to beginners or intermediates with development for WordPress. Maybe some future revisions of the book will improve some of the chapters and expand them with more recipes or update them to be more current with the latest version of WordPress.

Overall, this is a very good book and another great addition to Packt WordPress library.

Learn how to build WP plugins from start to finish

I've read a lot of technical books to learn the different languages used to develop websites. Many of them merely scratched the surface of what the language is capable of or did not explain the concepts well enough to allow me to apply them to different scenarios. So when I was asked to review this book, I was hesitant. But I thought hey, I've been looking for some good books on this subject and it's a freebie. Happily, I think I have found another publisher, or at least author, whose books I will seek out.

WordPress Plugin Development Cookbook takes you through the complete process of creating and publishing Wordpress plugins. As well as leading you through the Wordpress system of template tags, actions and filters, it guides you through the process of setting up a development environment, creating widgets, employing AJAX and JQuery functionality and internationalising your plugin.

Each chapter sets out to teach a specific function using several steps(recipes) gaining in complexity to illustrate the core concepts. All the recipes make use of coded examples which you can code yourself or download from the accompanying website. The recipes also include detailed explanations of the techniques employed and resources for you to find further information.

I wish I had come across this book earlier. Having recently created my first plugin I spent hours searching the web and querying forums for explanations on using custom post types and processing user submitted data with redirects. Although I am competent in PHP, Wordpress uses its own functions and syntax. Getting to grips with those is necessary to leverage Wordpress's functionality and efficiency. You can get a lot of information wading through the Wordpress codex but this book presents that same information in a much more accessible and coherent manner.

The book does assume some experience with Wordpress and website development and experience with PHP would be helpful. More advanced readers will probably skim over some of the recipes but will find a few nuggets of useful information. Beginners will appreciate the first chapter which provides a detailed explanation to set up a development environment.

After you've read the whole book you will have built a fully functioning real world plugin ready to publish. More importantly, you will feel confident to build your own plugins.

I got lost!!

I am a beginner. I tried to follow this book and got lost.
The explanations about the images sometimes did not illustrate the concepts. The focus shifted to something else. It was hard for me to find the linkage.
I like books written by Frank Webb, Al Stine and Charles Sovek. There are all very easy to understand and I can learn pretty fast by reading those books. Try one yourself if you are a beginner.

Disappointed!!

I was disappointed with this book as an experienced watercolor artist. I am in this field for > 35 years. The author only focused on one form of light and shades. Light and shades are very exciting subjects as we can see in the impressionists' masterpieces. I only found very limited scope of discussions in his book.

I bought this book because of its good reviews. But it is just not right for me.
Probably it is only suitable for tropical watercolourists. Only one kind of light and shadow effect was mentioned. The scope was too narrow. No much I could gain as a watercolour painter. It didn't fit the word 'Mastering'. But I could understand because many 'so called' masters could not write proper concepts.

Good book that introduces domain decomposition

A little something for everyone in this text. Discussion of computational issues, references, algorithms, and some convergence analysis. The authors do a good job of covering the subject at an understandable level. A small fault with the book is it leaves you wanting more! Excellent way to learn about these methods on your own.

This addition to the literature on aging focuses on the need for the elderly to remain vitally involved in the present. In the first chapter Erikson outlines his now famous theory of the eight-stage life cycle. Chapter two consists of often repetitious reflections on the results of interviews with 29 octogenarians from the Berkeley, California area. The third chapter is a reworking of a previously published essay exploring the life history of the protagonist depicted in Bergman's film classic Wild Strawberries. The concluding chapter discusses some of the issues associated with old age in the United States. About the Author
A winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, Erik H. Erikson was renowned worldwide as teacher, clinician, and theorist in the field of psychoanalysis and human development.

Joan Mowat Erikson was born in Canada; she earned her B.A. in Education at Columbia University and an M.A. in Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a teacher, writer, and craftsman and has worked with gold, silver, and precious stones. She is the author of a previous book, The Universal Bead. She is married to the noted psychoanalyst Erik H. Erikson.

Continuing to Understand Myself as I Continue on My Lifeline

I am writing my life stories for family and want to assure truthfulness and perspective in relating experiences and perceptions along the way. In my career as a school counselor I was aware of the Erikson's life cycle stages. My need now was to look at my life at age 71 and look back and see how each stage was built upon what was experienced and accomplished in the previous stages that led to where I was at the present moment. This book is the answer to my inquiry and need for a base line for the aging--and hopefully, sage-ing. Well written with the basic tenets laid out clearly and then exemplified with interviews of many elders. Highly recommended for those interested in on-going self-discovery and review of one's own life as it continues on....

Still holds true today... take out the outdated sociological language about "informants," etc. and there are lots of helpful nuggets for negotiating old age and leaving a good emotional legacy.
