An excellent reference work on ayurvedic herbal revitalization therapy

The word 'Rasayana' lterally means “the path that rasa takes” (rasa - referring to the primordial tissue - plasma), and ayana - (path). It is considered as the science of the restoration of youth and relief of the suffering and degradation that accompanies aging and bestows longevity. It is believed in ayurveda that the qualities of rasa dhatu influence the health of all the other dhatus of the body; hence, any medicine that enhances the quality of rasa is a a Rasayana. Rasayana tantra, the study and teaching of rejuvenation medicine, has long been a traditionally independent clinical discipline within ayurveda.

Rasayana (rejuvenation or revitalization therapy) one of the historic eight specializations within traditional ayurvedic practice, although this least understood branch of this science, is becoming of ever growing interest.

Until relatively recently, much of the information on India's research into their medicinal plants has remained within India, mainly published within Indian journals. Over the past few decades, however, as interest in the field of ayurveda has expanded globally, and with the integration of herbal. herbomineral and metallic medicines discovered and long used abroad into convention treatments, and along with the strengthening of academic networks internationally, the results of Indian herbal drug research is both becoming available to Western audiences as well as stirring Western inquiries into the properties of these medicines.

Looking at it from Westerrn perspective, a Rasayana medicine is one that may be said to have five properties: viz., its actions as an adaptogen, an immunostimulant, an immunomodulator, a pro-host probiotic and an anti-mutagenic. To which we might add a sixth quality, that of tropism: an attraction toward a particular tissue, organ or organ system.

This volume (one of a series dedicated to and entitled Traditional Herbal Medicines for Modern Times) provides detailed information on fifty-three specific plants (from Aak - Calotropis to Vidhara - Argyreia speciosa) used in various Rasayana preparations and describes their therapeutic benefits for numerous disorders. It also contains on Rasayana formulations. It is a comprehensive reference suitable for anyone involved in medicinal and aromatic plant research.

In light of the extreme importance of Rasayana in ayurvedic therapy it is fitting that Dr. Harsharnjit Puri has authored this excellent reference work with detailed and very clear explanations on the plants, their uses in folklore and tradition as well as in ayurveda, their means of preparation, their therapeutic indications and references to pharmacological studies and references. Altogether this is a very good book on ayurvedic herbal medicine and required reading on the subject of herbs and the promotion of longevity.

academic excellence and stellar research

Stolen Honor Stolen Innocence - It is hard to add to the "Book Description" because it so accurately and completely sets out a fair representation of this book. I can only add that I was formerly of the opinion that the moral declension of America that I have observed in my 67 years was, in most part, due to the collateral damage of WWII in its incipient beginnings. This book has disabused me of that notion for the most part. This is a work of academic excellence and stellar research into the fraud of the Kinsey Report and the ongoing influence of his disciples and the Kinsey Institute along with the help of the American Law Institute and the funding of the Rockefeller Foundation. Names of the promulgators and the complicit are substantially documented. For the moral activist like me it is an invaluable resource and will be very useful to me in my future writings. I highly recommend it to the mature and those not squeamish. Reisman has written of the basest behavior known to man in a dispassionate and clinical manner as to purposely avoid the mature reader to be tempted or unnecessarily revolted by the content.

Warning! Only if you want the Whole Truth!

Warning, this book says it like it is! No dancing around the issue of who did what in this sexual revolution. Shame on these deceitful, despicable creeps who brutalized and tortured hundreds if not thousands of innocent children to get their bogus research. Shame on our country for believing their research, not questioning it and applying it to our laws. It really is a sad day when you wake up and realize you have been lied to in this country and the "research" we live by is false! I highly recommend this book for truth seekers.

This is an excellent book for those that are starting the studies on permaculture and sustainability, I am using this book as a "text book" I am currently in my first semester of BA in Sustainability, because it is written in my native language I can read it faster than the many books that you can find in English, and sometimes the translations of book can change the message I am using this book, which was written in Spanish originally as guide. Since I am just starting my studies I cannot evaluate the whole content of the book, but I can tell that has been written with passion and that is very important to me.

Este libro es una excelente fuente de estudios para aquellas personas que quieren familiarizarse con los terminos de permacultura y sustentable, yo estoy empezando a estudiar un Bachelor con mencion en sustentabilidad y me ha ayudado mucho, sobretodo en familiarizarme con la terminologia, como estudio en Estados Unidos tengo que leer muchos libros en ingles, muchos tienen traducciones al espanol, sin embargo he experimentado decepcion con algunas traducciones, lo interesante de este libro es que ha sido escrito originalmente en espanol. Como soy una estudiante de primer grado no puedo evaluar todo el contenido como lo haria un profesional del campo, sin embargo puedo afirmar que este libro ha sido escrito con pasion y amor por el tema.

Indispensable para agricultores, ganaderos y permacultores que desean dise�ar o re-dise�ar sus fincas, ranchos, potreros y cualquier otra propiedad en la que intervengan caminos, canales, embalses de agua, surcos, camas elevadas, pastoreo y cualquier infraestructura que modifica la topograf�a natural de un terreno.

Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

About the Author
Michael Palin established his reputation with MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS and RIPPING YARNS. His work also includes several films with Monty Python, as well as THE MISSIONARY, A PRIVATE FUNCTION, an award-winning performance as the hapless Ken in A FISH CALLED WANDA and, more recently, AMERICAN FRIENDS and FIERCE CREATURES. This is truly exceptional. It was a wonderful TV series, and the book adds detail that they couldn't squeeze into the episodes, as well as more of Palin's wonderfully wry sense of humour. If you like travel books, or you like books about other cultures, or you just like a good non-fiction read - you could certainly do a hell of a lot worse than this one.

Seriously, someone needs to find a way to get Michael Palin and David Attenborough to breed. That is probably about the only way anyone is going to come up with a better documentary.

Having spent over a year travelling and living through most of Palin's Sahara route, I am very impressed with how he captured the magic of the area. Mr. Palin is funny, respectful and insightful. A very enjoyable read that took me back to the desert.

My opinion is no doubt colored by my experience in the Sahara, but I found Michael Palin's itinerary an excellent one. This is a travelogue with often excellent photos, not a scholarly book, but the author's approach is quite winning, if sometimes a bit superficial.

Cool stuff, but buy the tape or get a different book.

I have been practicing martial arts for over 12 years, and have learned many, many ways of trying to gain flexibility.
I found this book to be very interesting and entertaining, and the basic concepts presented are fairly simple to understand. With some searching you can verify that Pavel's methodologies are basically sound, but he rightly emphasizes that improper application of his methods can be dangerous.
If someone that's in reasonable physical condition with decent flexibility was given this book, they'd probably do fine, and maybe realize some awesome improvements. This is definitely not the book for a sedentary person with poor flexibility or a history of joint injuries.
Pavel's later book "Relax Into Stretch" is a much better purchase, because he basically took this material, made it less dangerous, and introduced a somewhat more structured method of gradual progression that is more appropriate for a wider range of people. The "Relax Into Stretch" video is also a simple, easy-to-follow tape that allows you to see exactly how Pavel performs these stretches.
Pavel's greatest failure with this book was introducing some excellent concepts while failing to provide sufficient scientific explanation and references for the intellectual while providing insufficient caution or structure to the beginner.
For a far better and more affordable guide on safe and surprisingly effective stretching, check out Kit Laughlin's "Stretching & Flexibility" and "Overcoming Neck & Back Pain" - these are phenomenal books for all levels of knowledge and ability, are far safer, and offer a much wider range of options for overcoming particular areas you may have difficulties with.

The Russian way to ultimate flexibility- the ONLY way to go!

Pavel's stretching protocol should be considered the first, last, and only choice for athletes, full-contact fighters, and sedentary folks alike for achieving maximum results in minimal time. This system actually teaches you how to reset the neuro-muscular control of your muscles! No kidding, by following the specialized methods in this book, even an untrained, middle aged man can achieve FULL SPLITS in less than half a year... fighters will learn specialized kicking drils and "dynamic flexibility" drills that greatly improve the velocity and destructive power of your kicks while at the same time protecting the knee ligaments from injury - even if you miss a full-power kick! Using these techniques I got incredible results in under a week. Pavel teaches how to achieve extreme range strength(vital for preventing injuries)and how to manipulate your "feedback loop" to increase your functional strength. This book also details sport-specific flexibility and strength principles of "accentuation", which dramatically increase performance in the movements essential to your chosen sport. My punches and kicks got an immediate boost in sharpness and power and my joints actually feel good afterwards. Pavel's system does not stress ligaments or tendons and therefore does not produce the weak, rag-doll looseness that conventional western relaxed stretching produces. It is a no-delayed gratification deal. You will also learn how much flexibility you actually need for a given athletic pursuit, and what to do if you already have the "rag-doll" problem (i.e., how to fix overflexibility), and how to tailor your reflexes for maximum performance! As if that weren't enough, Pavel teaches why warmups are actually counterproductive and how to display maximum flexibility "cold"! Also, SIXTY illustrated drills are provided to speed you on your way to dynamic, powerful, flexibility in motion - perfect for the fighter, athlete, and even those with joint problems! I am shocked and amazed at the quality of the results that his training methods have produced for me. And in so little time! There is something here for everyone, and I give this book (and all Pavel's books) my highest recommendation. Truly, a masterpiece that belongs in every athlete's collection.

A genuine and revolutionary book about stretching!

"Beyond Stretching" is a quite revolutionary book about flexebility and stretching. Its diveded into three main chapters. First, a teoretical and initial part about flexibility and typical misconceptions. Second, a practical part that easy describes each stretching methode. Third, a picture part that shows all the different stretching exercises and tells you how to practice them.
This book offer plenty of new informations about its topic. New and extremely effective techniques like Plyometric,Pneumomuscular and Shutdown Threshold stretching are clearly described. The traditional static or relaxed stretching methode is, in this book, considered as an ineffective way to stretch. The author claims that warming up is unnatural and stretching twice a week is sufficient to develop flexebility. By using the methodes that is shown in this book, you will gain astonishing results with even small amounts of stretching. That is a great benefit!
Learn: How to develop optimal flexibility in a fraction of the time you spend stretching today . How to do splits and high kicks even if you are old! How to achieve great strength without bulky and big muscles. How to avoid injuries. How to stop feeling like the Tin Man when you wake up in the morning. How to increase the blood flow in the joints and keep their surfaces smooth and painfree. How to use the three new,revolutionary and effective stretching systems.
I regard "Beyond Stretching" as an amazing book, with a new point of view on stretching and flexibility. I am a dancer and martial artist, so I have read plenty of books about stretching but this book was different. Becuase the text sometimes can be a bit confusing to understand; I read the book more than once. But, because this book offer so many new and useful tips and advices, it is worth every penny.

About the Author

Meaghan Kombol was born in Seattle, Washington, and worked for the maverick design company M&Co in New York before moving to London in 2002 where she worked at London's Design Museum before graduating from Greenwich University with a Masters in Landscape Architecture. Since then she has worked with some of the most exciting names in the field, including Martha Schwartz and Kathryn Gustafson — where she worked on the celebrated design for the 'Towards Paradise' garden at the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale. In addition to editing numerous books for Phaidon Press, she has written for The Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century World Architecture and Phaidon's Design Classics.

A Must Read Series!

How sad I am that The Fairwick Chronicles have come to a close (I think) with The Angel Stone! This series is perhaps the epitomy of my favorite sort of read. Dark and gothic, magical and hopeful...set in a small town with amazing characetrs. I just loved every moment of this ride Juliet Dark has taken us on.

In the third piece of this trilogy we see the town banding together to defend itself and stand up for what the town of Fairwick embodies. And it sure embodies a lot! Every imaginable type of mythical/paranormal creature calls this town it's home and together they must figure out a way to regain a town and college lost to those who would control it and banish/destroy all the others. Add to that a new element - Time Travel - and one might say that Dark had attempted too much within this series....that all of these paranormal creatures and storylines is overload. I would wholeheartedly disagree!

I loved how all of the characters, new and old, and even an adorable door mouse named Ralph, examine their weaknesses and find their inner strengths while on the path to save Faiwick and the college. Most of all though...I loved that we and Callie have the opportunity to revisit the past, meet William, watch Callie grow finally into the strong and independant woman we knew was there...and then finally get our Happily Ever After!

Juliet Dark's amazing world building and character development coupled with the lyricism and beauty of her writing style pull everything together and make this a must read series.

An ultra-sweet finale for Callie and her demon lover

Welcome to Fairwick College, a picturesque academic community located in a secluded area of upstate New York. Populated by a crowd of otherwordly creatures, disguised as humans and perfectly blended in the charming environment of a college town, Fairwick offers the best of Northern European folklore and fae mythology.

In The Angel Stone , cross-genre novel and final installment in The Fairwick Trilogy (penned by literary fiction author Carol Goodman under the pseudonym of Juliet Dark), Gothic and paranormal elements, folk traditions and literary references give shape to a fantasy world richly conceived, vividly portrayed, and laced with an alluring dose of romantic flavor. Fairies and witches, vampires and goblins, demon lovers and nephilims, wizards and other mythical beings trapped in the 'shadow land' between humans and Fairy World, are involved in an epic fight for the control of the passages connecting the two realms. Torn between loyalty to her community and undying love for her own incubus, Callie McFay, a fairy/witch hybrid and only surviving doorkeeper of the Fae World, will need to travel back in time to a 17th century Scotland to recover an amulet (the Angel Stone) that can protect her people from the nephilims' aggression. While rescuing faes and humans from the tiranny of the fallen angels, Callie will find in her ancestral history an even more powerful talisman and a way to reconnect with her true love, once and for all.

I wholeheartedly recommend The Fairwick Chronicles, with a warning: it would be a good idea to approach this highly imaginative trilogy starting with its previous installments. As cosmology, plot threads, and characters' back-stories are inextricably entwined and arc back to the prequel The Demon Lover (read my review here) and to transition episode The Water Witch, The Angel Stone doesn't really work as a stand-alone. Although the author provides her readers with a nutshell summary and sparse references to some pivotal facts concerning world-building and characters' back-story, only an ordered narrative framework can enhance your enjoyment and connection to cast and storyline.

Although the romantic element doesn't unfold with the same intensity and sensual charge of the previous books, the relationship between Callie and the different human incarnations of her demon lover finds its gratifying fulfillment in this ultra-sweet finale. With an abundance of fairy lore, pagan traditions, and references to ancient rituals performed in occasion of the winter solstice, The Angel Stone is a perfect Halloween read.

Excellent information is provided on all aspects of knitting. The book begins with textured stitches it then moves onto twisted stitches, raised stitches, cable, lace and colour work. The introduction to each section includes interesting historical information.Each stitch has an image of a finished sample and the pattern is written in longhand as well as on a chart. Some of the photographs of the knitted samples are unfortunately poor quality. Wanted to Love this Book

After reading and reviewing this new book, I still don't know its purpose. There's nothing in here that isn't in a number of other collections. Many of the stitch patterns are poorly executed; some are knit in dark colors, and the reader can barely see the detail.

The bits of history are interesting. However, the writing style is disjointed, cumbersome, and tedious. I do not exaggerate when I say the text is painful to read.

Finally, there are no heirloom patterns to knit. Instead, there are a few patterns for socks, hats, shawls that are mundane and amateurish.

Do check this book out at a library before purchasing.

Photograph Quality of Stitch Examples Unacceptable

If I had flipped thought this book at a store, I would not have purchased it. I am shocked at the abysmal quality of the photographs of the stitches in this book. I love pattern collections and have dozens of books, including pamphlets published over 80 years ago and I can honestly say I have never seen worse photograph. The texture chapter is the worst with incorrectly lit dark blue samples that are nearly useless. Many of the samples are incorrectly blocked with crooked stitch lines or in the case of the sad eyelet chapter not even uniformly opened. The photos in the twisted stitch section and raised stitch section or OK. Only the photos in the cables and colorwork sections are truly acceptable.

The patterns included are fairly mundane basic pattern that are commonly found in stitch collections. Only the twist patters stood out as something not commonly found in English language books. On the plus side all of the pattern are both charted and completely written out. There is also a nice introduction to each family of stitches with historical references. There are a handful of projects that are more crafty then fashionable and a brief basic knitting techniques section.

When I purchased the book from Amazon it was 40% off and I'm not sure it was even worth that price.

Lovely Patterns with a Plethora of Great Stitches That I Can Use

This book includes a huge number of stitches that can be used on most any knitted project. There are textured stitches, twisted stitches, raised stitches, cable stitches, lace stitches, color work, and knitting techniques. Patterns are also included and some of them are just wonderful.

The Heirloom Baby Blanket is one that I will surely knit soon as I know a lot of expectant mothers. This will definitely be a blanket that a mother will cherish for her child. The Celtic Cardigan, while a little short, can be lengthened, which is what I plan to do. The cable pattern is very becoming. The Hap Shawl is lovely and easy lace knitting, a pattern I will surely knit. It looks like feather and fan but is even easier. The Children's Fair Isle sweater is darling and easy to knit. This will be another pattern I will tackle.

The only criticism I have of the book is that the photographs of the stitches could be more clear. They are not that easy to see and need to be sharper. Perhaps in the next printing this can be looked into. Other than that, I love this book. It is a wonderful resource for me with a plethora of great stitches that I can use.
