Elegant Integration of Real Options and Complexity Thinking

This is an important book. John Holland, who is heavily referenced, foreshadowed its publication when he linked the concepts of real options and complex adaptive systems in a talk at the Santa Fe Institute in late 1998.
The authors clearly and persuasively explain how modular design adds a tremendous amount of value through the creation of real options. Furthermore, modularity allows for the evolution of both design and industry.
In the 1960's, IBM created the System/360, the first modular family of computers. As a result, IBM launched an industry -- and lost control over the tremendous value it stimulated.
"Design Rules" was recommended me by one of the authors' colleagues, who thought that I'd "eat it up." I did, and I'm hungry for Volume 2.

Good writing but limited perspective

Jen Sincero is a talented writer, and her edgy, irreverent style will be inspiring and motivational to many readers. If you've read other self help books then you probably won't find much that's new here. In fact, it's really the in-your-face tone and humor in her writing that makes this book worthwhile. As for her ideas, I personally found a lot to take issue with. First, she has a very polarized view of spiritual growth that divides our lives in to those that suck and those that are awesome. Maybe that works for young millennials just starting out in life, and if that's the audience she’s g oing for, then great, but most of us are somewhere on a continuum and her assertions that life is either this way or that way are simplistic to say the least. Sincero also uses a lot of highly critical, edgy language to describe people who are struggling or stuck - therefore not as awesome as she is - using words like "lame-o " "suck" "wuss" ...well, you get the idea. This may be mildly amusing the first time around, but it gets old fast and it's not exactly kind to those who may really be struggling. I have to confess that I question a writer who continually references her own life choices and personal career success as a model that the rest of us should follow. There is an exhibitionistic, narcissistic, "look at me", "look at how successful I am" dimension running through this book that is self-indulgent while lacking insight about what success could mean or look like for another person. Read this book for a quick shot of motivation if that's what you need, it's good for that, but look elsewhere for help in developing your own ideas and values about success and purpose. This is the Jen Sincero version and it may not apply to you.

Lee and Timothy Gura begin by talking about the importance of choosing a selection for oral interpretation by basing your selection on the key touchstones of universality, individuality, and suggestion. In addition to choosing a selection, the Basic Principles section of the textbook deals with Analyzing the Selection, Voice Development for Oral Interpretation, and The Use of the Body in Oral Intepretation. Consequently, the mind which analyses the selection is as crucial as the voice and body that interpret it for the listening audience. You will be impressed with the vareity of selections that are includes for analysis and oral interpretation. For example, in the Voice Development chapter you have selections as diverse as Garrison Keillor's "Lake Wobegon Days," Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky," Mathew Arnold's "Dover Beach," and a Navajo Ceremonial Chant.
"Oral Interpretation" then looks in turn as the major genres of writing that can be interpreted: Prose, Drama, and Poetry. There is also a chapter devoted to Group Performance, which tends to cut across the other three areas. The approach of Lee and Gura is to break down each form into specific elements that can be addressed in interpreting the text. This means speech phrases, balancing sentences, and tone color for prose; scenography, embodying characters, and physical focus for drama; and allusions, figures of speech, and sensory appeals for poetry. There are also appendixes offering Some Notes on Directing the Group Performance, Building and Presenting a Program, and a Brief History of Theories of Interpretation. The goal, as with the main part of the textbook, is to prepare teachers and students of oral interpretation for all eventualities.
"Oral Interpretation" was the textbook I used when teaching this particular class because of its comprehensiveness and its emphasis on practical advise. For me the key part was always the critical understanding of the selection, taking the piece apart so that you understood how it worked and could put it back together in performance and breath life into the words. Students always appreciated the specificity of the examples, where a paragraph could be devoted to taking apart a single sentence or appreciating the particular combinations of vowels and consonants that appear in a particular line of rhyme. Even those students who feel that they their voices are unsuited to oral intepretation, can appreciate the critical approach to understanding literature that they learn from this volume.

This books is such a gem! It's descriptive, well laid out, interesting, professional (yet also funny at times) and filled with lots of excellent pieces which are great to orally interpret. I adore this book.

Loving the Performance Literature Class and this text book

I'm only 1/2 way through the semester and using this text book in my Speech 231 Performance Lit class but I'm loving this text book. I do not like the flimsy cover - it makes holding it to read a really uncomfortable chore. I've had to add a stiffer cardboard cover to front and back so I can hold the book in my lap - but inside those covers - I'm enjoying the variety of works presented and the explanations into the anatomy of prose, poetry, performance and interpretation. As a screenwriter, I'm finding this to be an essential resource for screen play and for future works. Recommendation: please make the cover more user friendly.

The book that sparked my interest in the paranormal

30 years after my first reading of this book, I was happy to find a copy available at a fairly reasonable price. The book must be out of print as most of the used copies of it were priced way out of my price range.
I was doing some research for a presentation I was doing on the paranormal and really wanted a this book to use for a couple of citations. John Keel was a sort of pioneer of in the field of paranormal reporting. Keel cites Charles Fort as an inspiration in his pursuit of investigating the unexplained. Whereas Fort took the approach of cataloging mysterious events with cynical asides interspersed throughout. Keel takes more of a narrative approach of the subject and is adept at keeping a sense of humor throughout, with a chilling observation thrown in here and there to keep things spicy. When one bears in mind that Keel assembled this wide ranging assortment of arcane subject before the advent of computers and internet, this is a truly impressive introduction to the world that lies beyond our everyday lives. It was a a great read when I was in 7th grade and it still holds up, lo these many years later.

Fantastic read. I'm in the process of buying everything John Keel ever wrote, which is all being reprinted. Even his numerous magazine articles have just been reprinted under the titles:

-FINDING THE STRING

I discovered John Keel's books about a year ago, perfect timing with the republishing. Keel had a theory(s) that tied together everything from ufos to ghosts, monsters, electronic voice phenomena, deja-vu and religious experience. His two books OPERATION TROJAN HORSE and OUR HAUNTED WORLD make a very convincing case for his theories.

Wonderful book, will keep you reading till the last page.

This is an old Harlequin Presents favorite of mine and I was happy to see it available for my Kindle. The way that Bay helped Sabrina to become independent in spite of her blindness has always appealed to me. And the love he showed her, even to the point of letting her go, was very touching.
