To have a reason to get up in the morning, it is necessary to possess a guiding principle. A belief of some kind. A bumper sticker, if you will. People in cars on busy freeways call to each otherBoycott Grapes, comfort each otherHonk if You Love Jesus, joke with each otherBe Kind to Animals—Kiss a Beaver. They identify, they summarize, they antagonize with statements of faith:I Have a Dream, Too—Law and Order; Jesus Saves at Chicago Fed; Rod McKuen for President.

Lying on his back in bed, he gazes around the walls of his room, musing about what has happened to his collection of statements. They had been discreetly mounted on cardboard, and fastened up with push pins so as not to deface the walls. Gone now. Probably tossed out with the rest of the junk—all those eight-by-ten colorprints of the Cubs, White Sox, and Bears, junior-high mementos. Too bad. It would be comforting to have something to look up to. Instead, the walls are bare. They have been freshly painted. Pale blue. An anxious color. Anxiety is blue; failure, gray. He knows those shades. He told Crawford they would be back to sit on the end of his bed, paralyzing him, shaming him, but Crawford was not impressed.Lay off. Quit riding yourself. Less pressure more humor go with the stuff that makes you laugh.

Right, of course. Right again. Always right: the thing that is missing here is a Sense of Humor.Life Is a Goddamn Serious Big Deal—he should have that printed up to put on his bumper—if he had a bumper, which he doesn’t, not Conrad Jarrett the Anxious Failure dress this guy in blue and gray. A thousand-word book report due Wednesday in English Lit. The book has not been read. A test over the first six chapters in U.S. history. A surprise quiz in trig, long overdue.

He rolls onto his stomach, pulling the pillow tight around his head, blocking out the sharp arrows of sun that pierce through the window. Morning is not a good time for him. Too many details crowd his mind. Brush his teeth first? Wash his face? What pants should he wear? What shirt? The small seed of despair cracks open and sends experimental tendrils upward to the fragile skin of calm holding him together. Are You on the Right Road?

Crawford had tried to prepare him for this. “It’s all right, Con, to feel anxious. Allow yourself a couple of bad days, now and then, will you?”

Sure. How bad? Razor-blade bad?He wanted to ask but he hadn’t, because at that point his suitcase was packed and his father already on the way to pick him up and remarks like that only got you into trouble, pissed people off. Cancel the visa. Passport Revoked: they stamp it in red across your forehead. Uh uh. He’d had enough of that place. In the last months he had been able to spot the permanent residents every time. That unmistakable shuffling shoulders-bent walk. Mostly old men but some younger ones, too, in the dull, dusty-maroon bathrobes, sides flapping loosely, like the drooped wings of dying birds. Never. It was too damn small a world. Except that you always knew where you were. Mornings you talked first, then had O.T.—macram, painting, woodworking, clay. Afternoons you could take a nap, go for a walk, work out in the gym—a well-equipped, exclusive YMCA—basketball, handball, racquetball, you name it. Evenings there were card games, small get-togethers in the corners of the lounge, Scrabble, backgammon. Leo told him once, “Stop worrying. You’re okay. You can play Scrabble, that means you can concentrate. You’re ready.” He had laughed. “It means you can spell,” he said. “That doesn’t mean shit.” “Well,” Leo said, “it’s nice to be good at something.”

His father calls to him from the other end of the house. He thrashes to a sitting position, connected at once to sanity and order, calling back: “Yeah! I’m up!” and, miraculously, he is up and in the bathroom, taking a leak, washing his hands and face, brushing his teeth. Keep moving, keep busy, everything will fall into place, it always does.

He takes a quick look in the mirror. The news isn’t good. His face, chalk-white, is plagued with a weird, constantly erupting rash. This is not acne, they assured him. What it was, they were never able to discover. Typical. He tries to be patient as he waits for his hair to grow out. He had hacked it up badly, cutting it himself the week before he left. (“I didn’t think they would let you have scissors,” his grandmother said to him. “They shouldn’t have,” he answered her, oh so casual, thereby relieving the listeners of shock and embarrassment while exhibiting his poise, his Sense of Humor, see folks? Everything’s okay, he’s here, wearing his Levi’s, boots, and jersey shirt, just like everybody else, all cured, nobody panic.

This house. Too big for three people. Straining, he can barely hear the early-morning sounds of his father and mother organizing things, synchronizing schedules at the other end of the hall. It doesn’t matter. He doesn’t need to hear, and they would certainly not be talking about anything. important. They would not be talking, for instance, about him. They are people of good taste. They do not discuss a problem in the presence of the problem. And, besides, there is no problem. There is just Phase Two. Recovery. A moving forward.

From what? Toward what?He dresses himself (Progress!), looking out of the window, studying the lacy line of Russian olives that separates their property from the next-door neighbors’—what’s their name? Nice couple, but no kids, they’ve lived there for years—dammit, dammit, that’s the kind of stuff that scares you, not being able to remember names. He stares in concentration at the tall hedge of cedars hiding the house from the road. Cahill. Their name is Cahill. Okay, now relax.

But he cannot relax, because today is a Target Date. Tuesday, September 30. One month, to the day, that he has been home. And what are you doing Jarrett? Asking weird questions like From what? Toward what?Questions without answers. Undermining. A serious affliction. Worse than acne, worse, even, than an unidentifiable rash. So what the hell kind of cure was that? In the rec hall one night they.showed a movie on insects,The Something Chronicle. Hellstrom, that was it. The May fly has a life-span of eighteen hours. It spends that entire time laying eggs for the next generation. May flies, the narrator explained, know the answer. Because they never even have to ask the question. Nice for the May Hies.

There is a prickly sensation at the back of his throat. He turns away from the window, picking up his books from the desk. Then he puts them down again. No. Follow routines. First, the bed; then line up the towels in the bathroom; then pick up books; then eat break-Cast; then go to school. Get the motions right. Motives will follow. That is Faith. Vainly, he has taken to reading bumper stickers again, but they belong to other people. They are not his statements.I Am a Hockey Nut. Christ Is theAnswer—WhatWas the Question?

Vaguely he can recall.a sense of calm, of peace, that he had laid claim to on leaving the hospital. There were one or two guiding principles to get him through the day. Some ambitious plans, also, for putting his life in order. But the details have somehow been lost. If there ever were any.

2

Razor in hand, he stands before the rectangular, gold-trimmed mirror, offering up a brief prayer:Thanks. Appreciate all you’ve done so far. Keep up the goodwork, while, beside him, his wife brushes her hair. Her face is soft in the morning, flushed, slightly rounded, younger than her thirty-nine years. Her stomach is flat, almost as if she never had the babies. She raises her hands to the back of her neck, pinning her hair into a neat coil at the back of her head. Beautiful hair, the color of maple sugar. Or honey. Natural, too. The blue silk robe outlines her slender hips, her breasts.

“Did you call him?”

“Yeah, he’s up.”

She sighs. “I hate to play golf when it’s cold. Why doesn’t anybody in this league know enough to quit when the season’s over? Leaves on all the fairways, your hands freeze—it’s ridiculous.”

He leans toward her; gives her a kiss on the neck. “I love you.”

“I love you.” She is looking at him in the mirror. “Will you talk to him this morning? About the clothes. He’s got a closetful of decent things and he goes off every day looking like a bum, Cal.”

“That’s the style. Decency is out, chaos is in—” As her brows lift, he nods. “Okay, I’ll talk to him.”

“And the other thing, too.”

“What other thing?”

“Stopping by Lazenbys’ on the way home. Carole called again last week. It’s such a little thing....”

“I don’t want to pressure him about that. He’ll do it when he wants to. Carole understands.”

She shrugs. “When people take an interest, it would seem courteous—”

“We all know he’s courteous.” He turns his attention to his beard. Every morning the same face, the same thoughts. A good time to take stock, though. Calvin Jarrett, forty-one, U.S. citizen, tax attorney, husband, father. Orphaned at the age of eleven. He has caught himself thinking about that lately, thinking of the Evangelical Home for Orphans and Old People, an H-shaped, red brick building on Detroit’s northwest side, where he grew up. Wondering if after all these years it is still in existence. Strange that he has never bothered to check. An odd kind of orphanage: most of the kids had at least one living parent; some even had two. He had moved there when he was four, leaving the tiny apartment where he was born. His mother sent him gifts on his birthday, and at Christmas. Occasionally she visited him. Periodically she explained why he was living there, and not with her: there was no room for him in the apartment, no money; it was no neighborhood in which to bring up kids. She had a friend who knew people that were connected with the Home; just luck. The director had told him once that the Home was financed by “religious benefactors.”

He was named Calvin, for his dead uncle; Jarrett had been his mother’s maiden name. When she came to see him, she came alone. No one claiming to be his father had ever been in attendance; he had no memories of being any man’s son. So, if anyone should ask, he can always point out that he had no example to follow.

And what is fatherhood anyway? Talking to a kid about his clothes. Not applying pressure. Looking for signs. He knows what to look for now: loss of appetite, sleeplessness, poor school performance—all negative, so far. His son eats, he sleeps, he does his homework. He says he’s happy. Another duty: asking silly questions. Are you happy? He has to ask, though; pretends that he is kidding, just kidding; Conrad replies in kind. Pointless. Would the answer have been any different, even if he had thought to ask, before? Good manners have nothing to do with communication, he must remember that. And being a father is more than trusting to luck. That, too. Nobody’s role is simple, these days. Not even a kid’s. It used to mean minding your manners, respecting those who were bigger than you, treating each day as a surprise package, waiting to be opened. Not any more. So what’s changed? Not enough surprises? Too many, maybe.

He has had a vision all these months, of boys, with their heads next to stereo speakers feeding music into their ears, their long legs draped over chairs and sofas. Or their arms, stretched toward a basketball hoop in the side drive (he had sunk the posts in cement himself, when Conrad was eight, Jordan, nine; just after they bought the house). Where are all these kids? Joe Lazenby, Phil Truan, Don Genthe, Dick Van Buren—they are all seniors in high school this year. Is eighteen too old to play touch football on the lawn? Basketball in the side drive? Is it girls? Studies? Since he has been home, Conrad has gone once to the movies. Alone. “Didn’t anybody else want to see it?” Cal had asked. “I don’t know,” he said. “I didn’t ask.”

Responsibility. That is fatherhood. You cannot afford to miss any signs, because that is how it happens: somebody holding too much inside, somebody else missing signs. That doctor in Evanston. Make sure he calls him. It is for his own good. Why? Because his own vision, that of the boys hanging around, isn’t coming true? It has only been a month. All the other signs seem right. Stay calm. Keep it light. Try not to lean. A balance must be struck between pressure and concern.

Back when Conrad was in the hospital, back when the visits were limited to twice a month, he could afford to take responsibility for everything: the sections of gray peeling paint in the stair wells; small gobs of dirt swept into the corners of the steps; even a scar at the side of one orderly’s mouth. Now that he is home again, things are different. The responsibilities seem enormous. Staggering. His job alone, nobody else’s. Motherhood is different, somehow. And what about fathering girls? He must ask Ray Hanley sometime, how it feels. Is there more, or less responsibility? He couldn’t take more.Your mother wants me to tell you, you have a closetful of decent clothes. He will smile. “Okay. You told me.” But, in a minute, he will ask, “What’s wrong with what I’ve got on?”

Nothing. Nothing I can see. Only I don’t pass up any chances to discharge these fatherly duties, this is the age of perfection, kid. Everybody try their emotional and mental and physical damndest.

This one packs a gut-punch
By BB
I read this book every few years, and there are new layers to this relatively short book that are revealed every time. The father Cal is selfless, loving and is as clueless as he is blinded by the beauty and perfectionism projected by his cold wife. A son who is absolutely broken by a family tragedy,
and the burly psychiatrist who helps them navigate the life they're left with. The characters are full, and the writing is has depth without getting into the psychological weeds. Unless you want to. Great book!

Well written, deep, engaging novel dealing with the topic of Emotional Distress and family life
By Baron
The book was not my kind of genre and I was assigned to read it for a literature class, and although it is not the style of book that I normally enjoy reading, the book was very well written and the characters are deep. The book will keep you engaged and it really takes you inside the setting of a family dealing with emotional distress and showcases the emotions and feeling of the characters extremely well.

A book for a wide range of ages from young adults to middle age. I last read it as a 16yr old right after it came out in 1982.
By Kindle Customer
I read this book many years ago while in high school right after it came out in 1982. I remember thinking then with my 16yr old mind what an awesome, well written book it was. It was definitely different than other books I had read at the time. I've thought about this book often over the next 30+ yrs and wishing I could read it again but not being able to find it. The movie based on this book is also excellent with a very good cast, I've seen it several times over the yrs. It was quite excited to find this book on sale on kindle so of course I grabbed it up along with the audible book. Will be interesting how my now 50 yr old mind will appreciate it. The book read as a teen was the first edition, paperback version(oh how the world has progressed). I know as a teen I related to Conn the best, it will be interesting who my favorite character will be this time around, I imagine it will still be Conrad. I think this book will appeal to a wide range of readers age wise. I'm looking forward to reading this book again, and most likely I will end up reading it more than once.

Solid Calc. Based Physics Text
By Casey M Wood
Don't listen to the reviewers below. This is a fantastic Physics Book. The authors go directly at the concepts and provide the equations and derivations immediately afterword. This book assumes no prior Physics knowledge; however, you are expected to have at least started a Calculus course. It begins right where it should, with a Mathematical introduction and some general scientific bookkeeping; Sig Figs and Dimensional Analysis etc. Early portions of the book cover Newtonian Mechanics, then onto wave-physics, Thermodynamics, EM, SR, and QM. There's even a cosmology section as the final chapter. While I still prefer Knight's Calc. based text to this book, Fishbane's text has been an excellent supplement to Knight's book, particularly in Thermodynamics. I really like that the authors are not full of themselves. So many Physics texts are written to make the student feel like a dumb-ass, but this book is just the opposite. If you're using this book in a course, you'll be just fine. If you're lazy, or don't belong in a Calc. based Physics class, then you may end up writing a review like the others here. This is a good book.

Do the authors come from some 5th dimension?!
By Physics Lover
I took calculus I, and taking calculus II at the same time with my physics course. As a physics fan, I am pretty much disatisfied with this book. If you have already known some basic concepts in physics, you may find that this book provides more confusion than understanding. If you don't know anything about physics, you should not use this book as a base for your knowledge in physics. The author explains things as if he assumes that you know what is going on in his mind!

I have more to say about the problem exercises in this book. There are a couple of typos that if you have to use this book as your textbook for physics course, you may find out. The problems in the book are divided into 3 levels according to their difficulties: level I, II, and III. Sometimes, if don't want to say many times, I have no significant difficulties in solving a level III problem, but have a painful experience in solving level II problems. Level I is usually easy, but can be tricky. A major difficulty in solving problems in this book, even though you understand the physics concepts, is that you don't know what the problems are asking for. It is because the questions are often very ambiguous. You can check out some examples: problem 11 page 54 (note that the value 39.25 is a typo), 15 page 113, 24(c) page 204. These are just a few examples to give you a sense. If you are "lucky" enough to have this book as your textbook, and have to solve the problems in there for your homework, you will experience more!

Terrible Book
By Amy Shilling
This is supposed to be first and foremost a physics textbook, teaching you about the basic equations and general theory behind physics, some of which involves Calculus. The Calculus part is not an issue; the actual physics part of the book is. The entirety of the text within the chapters is incredibly confusing, very unhelpful, and very few of the examples provided are actually difficult in comparison to the problems at the end of the chapter. Most of the text is spent dealing with the derivision of formulas from each other and useless concept examples and Think About This... sections. These are supposed to help the reader understand the idea behind physics, not just the formulas. Yet, they are on such a low level a simple paragraph actually describing the theory would be sufficient. The book also doesn't give enough explanation to many of the higher concepts such as merging formulas and relating multiple ideas to each other. Were the examples in the chapters that are solved pertinent to more of the problems at the ends of the chapters, readers may actually be able to apply the explanation given for the solved problems to more like it. But as such, the explanation is often poor, not very coherent, and irrelevant to other problems.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cora Carmack follows up her trio of hits--Losing It, Faking It, and Finding It--with this thrilling first novel in an explosive series bursting with the Texas flavor, edge, and steamy romance of Friday Night Lights. When your dad is a coaching legend in Texas high school football, your life isn't your own. That's why Dallas Cole can't wait to get to Rusk University and finally get out of her father's shadow. But when he makes the jump to college ball--at her school no less--it's deja vu all over again. Now, half the team (and all their groupies) avoid her like the plague, convinced she'll tattle to her notoriously hard-ass father about a frat party or a bent curfew. The other half just wants to use her to get closer to the coach. And then there's Carson McClain, the supremely hot, newly transferred second-string quarterback. Oblivious of her identity, he approaches her at a party, and for once in her life Dallas decides to kiss first and ask questions later. While the heat between them is undeniable, Dallas and Carson have more than a few issues to tackle. He's a football player with a lot to prove. She's the coach's daughter who just wants a life of her own. How can they possibly win when they've both got so much to lose?

From the Author
First off, let me say that you don't have to like sports to like this book. In fact... you can loathe sports. Dallas sure does. I grew up in Texas with a football coach as a father, and this book is about much more than a sport. It's about a way of life... one I didn't always fit into. Dallas and Carson both have plans for their lives, ones that don't include the quarterback dating the coach's daughter. But where love is concerned, things rarely go according to plan.I hope you enjoy this sneak peek!In Texas, two things are cherished above all else--football and gossip. My life has always been ruled by both.

"This is a bad idea, Stella."

Stella straightens her shirt. And bystraighten, I mean she pulls it down to reveal what little cleavage she has (which is about twice as much as me).

"We're in college now," she says. "Bad ideas are the goal."

"Maybe it'syourgoal. You don't have a parent on the faculty. If this gets back to him--"

It's Friday night, our first on campus, and she stops just before the walkway of a frat house that hums with pent-up music. More than a head shorter than me, Stella reaches up and forces me to look at her.
"Okay, sister. Let's nip this in the bud right now. No one is telling anyone anything. There are like ten thousand people on this campus. You, my dear, arefinallya small fish in a motherfucking ocean. Loosen up and enjoy it. This isn't high school anymore."

Could it really be that simple?

Loosening up has always been easy for Stella. Her mom is a bigger party animal than she is. She'll probably get a high five if we get caught. Me...well, I'm a little scared to think of how my dad would react. What little freedom I have would disappear faster than the hot water in my dorm on days that end in ay.
For one glorious month, I had entertained visions and fantasies of what college would be like. Rusk wasn't my ideal school, far from it, but it wassomething. I could finally make my own decisions and not have to worry about them migrating to the coach's office before lunchtime. I had ached for high school graduation day like there was a knife in my gut, and I couldn't pull it out until May. Then my dad was offered the open position here at Rusk, and I feel like I'm still gasping for breath around that knife.
Maybe we aren't in high school anymore. But it's the same damn misery with a different name.

Unless I do something about it.

But it's easier to be miserable, so I shake off Stella's grasp. "All it takes is one person to say something to someone, who tells some else, who mentions it at church or practice or anywhere, and I'm dead. Stick a fork in me and dip me in hot lava. Dead."

"God, you're so overdramatic. Sooner or later, you've got to stop being scared of your dad. If you don't, you're going to graduate college a virgin with half a dozen cats, some dumb-ass degree he wants that you couldn't care less about, and only professors and academic journals for friends."

I wince, because she's right aboutalmostall of it. She would be furious if she knew I wasn't a virgin and didn't tell her. I'd always meant to, but it isn't exactly my proudest memory, and the longer I'd put it off, the easier it had become to pretend that it wasn't a thing. I refuse to let it be a thing. Instead, I roll my eyes and say, "Thanks for the vote of confidence."

"Hey, I'm just being the voice of reason here."

"More like the devil on my shoulder."

"I accept that role." Stella cackles and nudges her elbow in my side like she's just said the funniest joke ever. And in spite of myself, I crack a smile.

I stare up at theKappaSighouse. All the frat houses on campus are old colonial-style mansions with creeping ivy and pearly white columns. They look so presentable...probably in an effort to hide the absolute debauchery that happens inside.

God, I just thought the worddebauchery. Stella's right. Iamgoing to end up a lame cat lady, probably yelling at people from my front porch and waving my cane around like a madwoman.
It just isn't fair.

College is supposed to be a time to break free, to start fresh. You would think being thefootballcoach's daughter would be a benefit. I know more about the sport than half the guys at our school, knowledge that should make it easy to land a date.

If they weren't all petrified of my father.

Or even worse...panting after him like he's bacon dipped in Nutella wrapped in more bacon. I could probably walk into this party wearing only my bra and underwear (slathered in some of that Nutella), and some idiot would bumble over, completely unaware, to ask me about my dad, what his plans were for the season, or how many high school state trophies we have lying around the house.

Stella's slim fingers snap in front of my face.

"Earth to Dallas. Are you actually frozen in fear right now?"

I roll my eyes, a habit of mine, especially around Stella. "I'm not afraid. I'm just...not optimistic."

"Don't tell me...you were brainstorming all the ways you could be a killjoy tonight."

I give her a playful shove. "I was contemplating covering myself in Nutella, actually."

"Now,thatis what I like to hear! Ten points for creativity."

From the Back Cover

Dallas Cole loathes football. That's what happens when you spend your whole childhood coming in second to a sport. College is her time to step out of the bleachers and put the playing field (and the players) in her past.

But life doesn't always go as planned. As if going to the same college as her football-star ex wasn't bad enough, her father, a phenom in Texas's world of high school coaching, has decided to make the jump to college ball . . . as the new head coach at Rusk University. Dallas finds herself in the shadows of her father and football all over again.

Carson McClain is determined to go from second-string quarterback to the starting lineup. He needs the scholarship and the future that football provides. But when a beautiful redhead literally falls into his life, his focus is more than tested. It's obliterated.

Dallas doesn't know Carson is on the team. Carson doesn't know that Dallas is his new coach's daughter.

And neither of them knows how to walk away from the attraction they feel.

Sure to hook romance readers of all ages
By ysar
Dallas doesn’t want anything to do with football or the men involved in it. As the daughter of a football coach, she’s tired of dating guys who are more interested in what her dad can do for them than a real relationship. And now that her dad’s coaching at her college, she’ll do all she can to avoid being associated with the team.

Carson is counting on a football scholarship to get him an education and opportunities he otherwise can’t afford. The last thing he needs is a distraction from his game and his studies. But a beautiful redhead soon captures his attention, and despite his own priorities and her ideas about football players, he just can’t stay away.

The Verdict: Cora Carmack won me over with Losing It, so I went looking for more of her stories and landed in the Rusk University series. And what a find!

If you’ve got parents who think they know what’s best for you, you can certainly relate to Dallas. College seems like it could be the perfect escape from a life that’s always revolved around her dad’s coaching job, but when he accepts a position as football coach at Rusk University, Dallas knows that unless she can get a scholarship to somewhere far away, she’s stuck being the coach’s daughter at yet another school. Carson’s family has hit a financial rough spot, and it seems that football is his ticket to a better life. He’s giving football his all, trying to make the team at Rusk University and hoping his skills on the field will earn him a full ride scholarship, so he can stay in school.

When Carson and Dallas first meet, neither has a clue who the other is, and they hit it off right away. But then Dallas shows up at practice and catches a glimpse of Carson in his practice uniform, and that perfect match doesn’t seem so perfect after all. To make things worse, Carson is determined to solidify his place on the team at Rusk, while Dallas would do anything for a dancing scholarship that would take her halfway across the country. Add in one ex-boyfriend on the team, a coach who might not be thrilled about his player dating his daughter, and all the usual challenges that college brings, and these two are in for a tough journey.

Carmack does a great job of creating realistic characters facing the typical challenges of growing up and going after what they want for themselves. The conflict isn’t contrived or overly dramatic; it’s just a result of who they are as individuals, and that makes it believable. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Carson is all kinds of hot, and with sassy Dallas, their chemistry is off the charts. All Lined Up by Cora Carmack is a great start to another New Adult series that is sure to hook romance readers of all ages.

In Review: All Lined Up (Rusk University #1) by Cora Carmack
By Kim
Ok, I'll admit it. I have been putting off writing this review forever because I know no words can do this book justice. If it were up to me, I would just gush endlessly about how much I love-love-loved everything about this book and the story and the characters in lieu of a review. My review will probably be more of a ramble than anything resembling a coherent review, so stick with me while I go total fangirl on you.

"In Texas, two things are cherished above all else – football and gossip. My life has always been ruled by both."

I was absolutely thrilled to learn that one of my favorite new adult authors was writing a series about football, Texas and love. Because, does it really get any better than that? I'm a total football addict. On Saturdays during football season, you can expect to find me camped out on the couch from noon until at least 10 PM watching game after game after game. I watch Sportscenter at the gym. I follow a TON of my alma mater's players (and former players) on Twitter. I watch the draft. Friday Night Lights will always be one of my all-time favorite shows. Yes, my name is Kim and I am a football addict. So, of course I was ecstatic to find out about this series, especially once I realized Cora's a coach's daughter and would bring that perspective to the book, making it even more real.

“I don't know that dancing fixes anything. I don't feel magically happy because of it. My problems don't disappear when the music ends. But I understand life better when I dance, and understanding is half the fight of surviving.”

"You really want to have a conversation about what's not healthy?" She leans on the high-top table next to me and mimics, "Oh, Stella, he's so sweet and so nice. And I think I really like him. OH... JK HE PLAYS FOOTBALL. HE'S DEAD TO ME."

If you asked me what I loved most about All Lined Up, I wouldn't even begin to be able to narrow it to one thing. If I had to, however, I would say it was the characters. They feel more like friends than characters in a book. They were all just so realistic and multi-faceted and amazing. I would totally be friends with them in real life. The ladies of Rusk University are strong and sassy and among some of my favorite in NA lit. First off, you have Dallas, the dancer, reader, no-time-for-other-people's-bulls***, coach's daughter who hates football. I connected with Dallas. Hard. Minus that whole football-hating thing however, but even that made sense to me. I could understand her mixed feelings about football and the players. It would be expected. Her best friend Stella was all kinds of awesome. She's the life of the party, constantly trying to get Dallas to break out of her shell and loosen up. She reminded me so much of my best friend and roommate – except for the obvious differences like her being a tiny Asian pixie and him being a 6'3" gay man. Other than that, they could be the same person.

"I'm kidding, little lioness. I'm not looking to hook up with you. I just find your honest refreshing. That makes you better company than every person I've run across tonight."

The guys of Rusk U are nothing to sneeze at either. Of course, Carson is my favorite. I fully suspect I'll change favorites at least twice as I read the rest of the series, but Carson will always have a place in my heart. The best part about him? He wasn't a stereotypical football player! Yay! Whether this is because he's second string or because he worked hard to get where he was, or just because he was a down home country boy who was raised right, I don't know. But he was unlike the other football player characters I've read in other books and I loved it. He was sweet (and hella sexy) and driven. He had goals and took nothing for granted. Ryan is probably my second favorite male in the story. The team manager who is smart, funny and cute. He's a charmer and he's right up my alley. Levi, the starting QB and Dallas's DB (douchebag not defensive back) ex, is someone who will have to work pretty hard to redeem himself in my eyes, but if he doesn't, I'm ok with that. The other bad boy of RU, Silas, has me all kinds of curious. I have a wee bit of a crush on him and I can't wait for his book.

"And I... I'm still stuck. In my father's shadow. In Texas. In this lame state school with a joke of a dance program. And now I'm stuck at my first frat party with the ex who broke my heart. Yay college."

In All Lined Up, Dallas is away at college, trying to make a name for herself and find herself. It's not easy when you live in the shadow of a football coach father. While she would be beyond content to stay home and read or watch a movie, her friend Stella insists on dragging her out to a party. It's at that party she not only runs into her ex, but is hit on by a total player and ultimately winds up meeting Carson in an attempt to escape from the other two. They forge a quick connection without really knowing much about the other. Carson is trying to stay focused, which of course means staying away from girls, but something about Dallas makes him rethink that. Dallas learns he's a football player and has mixed feelings because she swore she'd never date another football player, but there's something special about him that makes her want to give him a chance. What happens between them? Well, you'll just have to read and find out.

"My voice is little more than a growl as I say, "You cannot do things like that, Daredevil, and expect me not to pull you onto my lap and kiss you senseless."

"I can't walk away from you because I don't want to. There are a thousand things I want and need to do, but you trump all of them. You drive me to distraction, and all I want to do is get lost in you. All I want to do is make you lose it, too."

I think it could go without saying that I absolutely loved Dallas and Carson together, but there, I said it anyhow. They made a fantastic pair. They had a TON of chemistry and it went beyond just the physical stuff. If you're looking for really steamy scenes, you won't find an abundance of them in this book. The ones that are there do have a fair bit of heat though. There was no doubt to me that what Dallas and Carson was real and worth fighting for, if both of them could get out of their heads long enough to give in and let it happen. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a book that's overly dramatic or riddled with angst. Thank goodness. I don't think my heart could have taken it. It still gave me a huge case of the feels though.

"I loved the way one person could start a chant, and soon a stadium of thousands had picked it up and were screaming in unison. I loved that kids who didn't give a crap about school were suddenly belting the school song from the top of their lungs. I loved those tense moments before the start of a play when everyone is wishing and hoping exactly the same thing, and the whole stadium holds its breath."

The world-building in All Lined Up was fantastic. I felt like I was back at college, especially during the football game and party scenes. I was completely into the world of Rusk and nearly ready to trade my old gold and blue Mountaineers gear for maroon and gray. It didn't feel like I was reading about these characters and this fictional university. It felt like I was living it, or at the very least, watching it on a big screen.

"God, do they make WD-40 for flirting? Because I am rusty."

All Lined Up has the humor and heart I've come to expect from Cora. There were quite a few lines that made me literally laugh out loud and even more that left me grinning. There are some phrases I have decided I need to incorporate into my daily life ("dear, sweet Jesus riding a unicorn" anyone?). I know this story is personal and special to Cora and her passion for it came through in every word. Make sure you read the "behind the book" portion after you've finished the story. I think it will give you an even deeper appreciation for how she put herself out there with this book and that glimpse into her background made the book that much more meaningful to me.

"No easy days."

I seriously can't recommend this book highly enough. There's a little something for everyone in All Lined Up. With characters I adored, great friendships and sweet and sexy romance, all built around a sport I love in a fictional setting that felt beyond real, it was the total package for me. I will reread this one for years to come, particularly during my least favorite months of the year (you know, the off season) when I'm desperately looking for anything to hold me over until football is back. To say I can't wait for the next book in the series would be a HUGEmungous understatement.

"Go Red. Fight Red. Bleed Red."

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via Edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review. Quotes come from the review copy and may differ from the final version.

stellar, fresh, take on college love and hurdles that come with it.

All Lined Up by Cora Carmack

Soooo Happy I can finally share my review with you guys!! I've read All Lined Up a total of THREE times since I got my hands on it (yeah. It's not even releasing until May 13. That should tell you how awesome it is.) I am totally, irrevocably, in love with these characters.

All Lined Up is a stellar debut novel in the Rusk University series by Cora Carmack. There is no other series that has roped me in to the minds of the characters as well as Cora did in All Lined Up. Cora’s style is fast and witty.. and almost always includes an awkward character that just can’t quite get her s*** together – which we can ALL relate to (okay, or at least I can). All Lined Up is no different in that aspect.

These characters are so alive in my head that I feel like I could call them up on the phone, or shoot them a text, and damn! I really wanna go to Rusk University! Dallas Cole is hilarious, and her inner monologue is eerily close to the s*** storm that swirls around in my brain every single day.

Carson McClain? He’s not much different. He has real life struggles that anyone who’s ever stepped foot into any sort of competitive endeavor can relate to. It really doesn’t hurt that he’s hotter than boiled crawfish in the Louisiana Bayou. (Yeah… I totally just went there.. god I really want some crawfish…)

Stella Santos is the perfect side kick for Dallas and her sometimes embarrassingly awkward moments, and their dialogue will have you laughing no matter the kind of mood you’re in. I can’t wait until I can sink my teeth into another book in this series, because I know that it’ll be just as amazing.

What is really awesome about this book is that it’s a peek into how Cora grew up. They always say “write what you know” and she did. You can tell it with every word on the page, that Cora has some intense and passionate feelings - whether they’re the good or bad kind – about growing up in Texas (or anywhere in the deep south, really) as a football coach’s daughter. If you’re not from the south, let me clue you in. Football….it’s a religion, one that everyone practices, whether they believe in it or not. You really get a good glimpse of that in this book.

Oh, and the book doesn't exactly lack in the "steamy" department either..... Did I mention how hot Carson is?

I sincerely hope you’ll check out not just All Lined Up, but the whole Rusk University series, and if you haven’t read any Cora Carmack, that you’ll come back asking me what else she’s written and where you can buy it. I really think you’ll be glad you did.

A solid study companion for the CISM

Good resource if you need to brush up on the exam question format and vocabulary. The book really only consists of 100 questions with detailed explanations of the reasoning behind the answers. There is a test exam of those 100 questions at the back. Used it to write the exam last weekend and feel like it was sufficient for me to pass. You *must* have prior industry experience, this book will not take you from zero to pass if you don't understand the industry and concepts in the book.

Cranial Nerves
By dr william g novak
Highly readable. Enjoyable.Every radiologist reading brain MRI should know the course of every cranial nerve from brainstem nuclei to the nerve end point and it's branches with the relationship to other important structures in the cranium and extra cranial course. Valuable for medical students, radiology residents, neuroradiology fellows, practicing diagnostic and neuroradiologist's or others in the neural sciences requiring an easy but valuable and concise text.

Med student perspective
By CB
Cranial Nerves: Anatomy, Pathology, and Imaging is a wonderful book for imaging. I showed this to our Neuroscience module director, and he immediately asked where he could get the digital images to use on tests. The explanations were very thorough and the introduction to each cranial nerve was very helpful in orienting oneself within the brain/brainstem. This book was a bit above the level of understanding required for a second year medical student, but I absolutely plan to keep it on hand for my neurology and radiology rotations.

Branding Post-Communist Nations: Marketizing National Identities in the

Nation branding--a set of ideas rooted in Western marketing--gained popularity in the post-communist world by promising a quick fix for the identity malaise of "transitional" societies. Since 1989, almost every country in Central and Eastern Europe has engaged in nation branding initiatives of varying scope and sophistication. For the first time, this volume collects in one place studies that examine the practices and discourses of the nation branding undertaken in these countries. In addition to documenting various rebranding initiatives, these studies raise important questions about their political and cultural implications.
