About the Authors: Joy Monice Malnar is Associate Professor of Fine Arts at Loyola University of Chicago, where she teaches courses in interior architecture and design. She holds a BFA in Interior Design from the Chicago Academy, as well as a MArch (Master of Architecture) from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Interior Design Educator's Council, and an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers. Her professional work has included both contract and residential design at such firms as Sargent and Lundy, Whitaker Associates, and Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill. Frank Vodvarka is Associate Professor of Fine Arts at Loyola University of Chicago, where he teaches graphic design, photography, and design theory. He holds a BA in Plastic & Graphic Arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and an MFA in Graphics from the University of Chicago. His professional work has included graphic design, stage design, and architectural photography, and he is a member of the Interior Design Educator's Council and the Design Communication Association.

At Long Last

The opening salvo in what promises to be the new turf wars of design. Though limited to architecture and attendant arts, the battle royale will be enjoined in brand, package and product design -- commercial arts are now the true avant garde of design practice.

I found Chapter 11 ("Sensory Schematics") to be the most engaging and practical, and have been using my own variation of the authors' "sensory slider" for years.

My firm's invention of what we call NeuroDesignTM offers new and fruitful options for companies looking to capture, clarify and magnify the emotionally resonant components of their visual messaging.

It is heartening to see, finally, serious effort being put into this arena by architects.

Michael New is the author of Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Implementation Guide. In addition to implementing and maintaining Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control in numerous independent consulting assignments, Michael took on many Grid Control responsibilities when working for Oracle Consulting. A must have book for Oracle Cloud Control 12c

Having attended Mike's GC 10g deep dive training classes to fellow Oracle Consultants, while working with Oracle Consulting, I was impressed by the way how the author structures and presents the complex matter of deploying OGC 10g in major real life projects in a logical and systematic way. This was a compelling enough reason for me to purchase the first Mike's book `Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Implementation Guide'. The book was a crystal clear summary of Mike's experience on a dozen of GC10g real life deployment projects and training deep dive classes delving into the inner working and deployments of the GC product. It goes without saying that the first book raised the bar of expectations from a book on a complex product such as Oracle Grid Control 10g and his successor Oracle Cloud Control 12c.

Few years later, once Oracle Corp. released Oracle Cloud Control 12c a lot of improvement was introduced to the product and the complexity and new features and functionalities of the product were overwhelming. That is where, after already having a quite high expectations for a GC/CC book, I purchased the `Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Deep Dive' book. The new `Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Deep Dive' book is NOT another re-write of the official Oracle Cloud control documentation or an illustration of how to follow the documentation in order to have a OCC12c running but rather a well structured deep dive into the complexity of the product for a real life deployment using the new product functionality. The book is all you need to get an insight into OCC 12c complex real life deployment no matter whether you are new to OGC/OCC product family or you have a previous OGC experience.

It works!!

If your SAT student is willing to do the work in this book, he/she will be rewarded. Erica is a master at explaining what the SAT is looking for and creating exercises that mimic the real exam. The exercises in this work book are the real deal--they helped my daughter get (really) close to a perfect SAT writing score, in what was previously her lowest section.

nice supplement to the grammar book

I got the Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar for my daughter, and then bought this volume 2 for her weeks before her SAT exam. This is a nice supplement to the previous book. It includes eight complete multiple choice writing exams in SAT format: each test contains one 25-minute section with 35 questions and one 10-minute section with 14 questions. It also has comprehensive explanations which cover grammar as well as strategies for identifying correct and incorrect answers. They are really good to reinforce the patterns and shortcuts discussed in the grammar book. My daughter told me that the tests in this book accurately reflect the content and difficulty level of the real exam. She is very satisfied with this book. She was exposed to SAT fundamentals from 9th grade when she enrolled in Beestar's online SAT program at hs.beestar.org. Over time, the program has made a big difference. The exercises are designed for fundamental skills, and are excellent for the upcoming new SAT standards. With such accumulated skills over time, the final preparation becomes much smooth. It is more for checking weak spots and building confidence. Eventually my daughter's SAT score is probably the highest in her class. She attributes her top score to both early little by little accumulation and the final intensive preparation.

She thought the book was tedious because some of the questions seemed unorthodox

Got an 800 on the multiple choice portion!

My daughter used the 2013 edition of this book, which included only the 8 tests and no instruction. Honestly, she thought the book was tedious because some of the questions seemed unorthodox. But, it worked! She finally escaped her 710 to 720 slump where she missed about 2 questions per test. The writing section has less questions, so it is very difficult to get over 720 because each question is worth so many points. In addition, you can lose points if your written essay is not rated at least an 8.

My daughter may have had a knack for grammar because she scored a 69(0) on her ninth grade PSAT, missing about 4 questions. Even my son, who struggled in school and required an IEP, scored a 590 on his SAT. So, there may be a tendency to score higher for our family. The 800 was very elusive, though, and required much strategy. In tenth grade, my daughter scored a 72(0), but by 11th grade she went back to a 710.

I give credit to 2 of Erica's books for getting her to the 800. My daughter was so frustrated, she hasn't decided to whom she would give the credit. We used Erica's Complete Guide to ACT English and studied it over the summer while taking the five practice tests from Peterson's The REAL ACT. Second, we used Erica's eight practice tests in this book. Although my daughter thought the process was worthless (as she was missing up to four questions in Erica's practice book at one point), I knew Erica was teaching her to avoid all of the possible errors by thinking about the rules she had learned in Erica's Complete Guide to ACT English. The Complete Guide helped her get a 35 out of 36 on her first official sitting for the ACT.

Erica's Complete Guide to ACT English is simply the best because it presents grammar at the basic rules level. Knowing grammar this way improves your performance on the SAT, which tests grammar in application and not so much in context. While taking the SAT, often you are going on your gut feel for the correct answer--you don't always know what grammatical error is really being tested. With the ACT, you are being asked to correct the underlined portion within context, which allows you to think about the rules. With the SAT, you may be asked to identify the underlined portion that is in error, but not always to correct the error--leaving you wondering until the test results come back if you were even on the right track with your answer.

I use Erica's Complete Guide to ACT English in all of my college prep camps. I just find it to be the most thorough. However, many students still struggle with grasping the rules and applying them on the real test. Erica's tests are designed to direct you to the error and make you recognize it, but it takes time to apply it to your performance on the real test. So, I have to use Peterson's The Real ACT test prep to show specific examples of the grammar errors and train students to improve their performance.

But, back to the review of this book..
This book is the only resource that I have found that has 8 practice tests, so I highly recommend it. Erica's Complete Guide to ACT English is also the best, so I highly recommend it, too. Going between the ACT and SAT is a winning strategy that will boost your final score on either exam. My daughter got her elusive 800 in the end, and colleges pay top dollar for high grammar and math scores on the ACT. While math and reading matter most on the SAT, a high grammar score on the SAT will stll boost your overall score for scholarships.

Update: After reviewing the new SAT for 2016, I highly recommend Erica's Complete Guide to ACT English for the SAT because the SAT has been reformatted to look like the ACT and now tests grammar in the context of a 4-5 paragraph story. The evidenced based work on the grammar section of the SAT will also be combined with your Reading score and contribute to your overall 1600 score scale. The only difference is that the SAT passages will also contain charts, graphs, or data that must be interpreted and written with the correct English. I think it is obvious that the college-readiness tests are now pushing reading comprehension, analytical ability, and writing skill.

Excellent/I've already rated this book excellent. If those who wish to follow life within a spiritually and felfless manner Scott M Peck is the perfect author for you. I would suggest reading his books in order of their being published as they will all make much better sense this way. And finally if you take your time and absorb the minute amount of wisdom he shares compared to what must be left residing in his mind you will still hopefully become the best person you possibly can on this earth. He speaks of living and about dying, sbout evil and godliness, about selfless and being humble and also about narcissism. It's a wonder journey that has transformed my life for the better because he not only writes it from a psychiatrists point of view though he will explain it in enough ways that everyone interested gets it. He is truly the best writer ever................

Thinking beyond today.

Immediate gratification is what society has become, but what are the results that will come about because of it. Peck is a wonderful person who puts the reader in the position to look inside yourself and ask where are you today, where did you come from and where are you going as a result of your actions.

I would strongly recommend this book for people to read who are concerned with where their future lies as their actions dictate where they are going.

How could Margaret Cheney (Tesla : Man Out Of Time) and Robert Uth (Tesla : Master Of Lightning) improve upon their past individual works (a book and documentary video, respectively)? By combining their efforts to produce this wonderful book, that's how. The informative text is interspersed with 250 b&w and duotone images that show Tesla and the era in which he excelled (truly a man out of time). About the Author
Robert C. Feenstra is Professor of Economics at the University of California, Davis. He received his B.A. in 1977 from the University of British Columbia, Canada, and his Ph.D. in economics from MIT in 1981. Feenstra has been teaching international trade at the undergraduate and graduate levels at UC Davis since 1986, where he holds the C. Bryan Cameron Distinguished Chair in International Economics. Feenstra is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, where he directs the International Trade and Investment research program. He is the author of Offshoring in the Global Economy and Product Variety and the Gains from Trade (MIT Press, 2010). Feenstra received the Bernhard Harms Prize from the Institute for World Economics, Kiel, Germany, in 2006, and delivered the Ohlin Lectures at the Stockholm School of Economics in 2008. He lives in Davis, California, with his wife Gail, and has two grown children: Heather, who is a genetic counselor; and Evan, who recently graduated from Pitzer College.Alan M. Taylor is Professor of Economics at the University of California, Davis. He received his B.A. in 1987 from King s College, Cambridge, U.K and earned his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1992. Taylor has been teaching international macroeconomics, growth, and economic history at UC Davis since 1999, where he directs the Center for the Evolution of the Global Economy. He is also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and coauthor (with Maurice Obstfeld) of Capital Markets: Integration, Crisis and Growth (Cambridge University Press, 2004). Taylor was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004 and was a visiting professor at the American University in Paris and London Business School in 2005 06. He lives in Davis, with his wife Claire, and has two young children, Olivia and Sebastian."
