Some good information, but be aware that the author has an agenda.

I am an acupuncturist and herbalist licensed by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and have cared for thousands of humans using natural means (including essential oils) over the course of the eleven years I have been in full time private practice. I also hold a master's degree in physiology. I have used many professional quality nutritional supplements, herbal medicines, and essential oils (including the Young Living products that this author advocates), so I have a sophisticated working knowledge of manufacturer claims, product purity testing, potential for adulteration of products, etc. I am also owned by a flock of seven parrots and use both natural and conventional products to care for them. I say all of this to make it clear...this ain't my first rodeo when it comes to the topics addressed in this book.
There is good information here and I am glad to see this topic addressed. So many in the bird community are so fearful of any product with any scent at all that I think we miss out on a lot of powerful means of enhancing the wellbeing of our flocks. On the other hand, unfortunately, this book reads as a lengthy advertisement for Young Living Essential Oils. The author's tightly controlled Facebook page is the same. This is great for people who are already YL distributors, but for those of us who are not it creates a dilemma. I know from my dealings with dozens of other herbal medicine and supplement manufacturers that there is no industry where there is only ONE company that makes safe and pure products. The same is true of the essential oil industry.
I understand the author's desire to make sure that responsible information is disseminated regarding the use of essential oils and parrots. There is real potential for harm -- I understand that. But an awful lot of what she says in this book and on her Facebook page smacks of fear-mongering. Just this morning, a very polite discussion was started by another member of the author's Facebook page. We were discussing the use of another brand of essential oils for various conditions. I was very careful in what I said, making a point to say that it was not my intent to start a debate. The conversation was civil and I was excited for the opportunity to connect with a few people who were not directly connected with Young Living essential oils. Shortly thereafter the whole thread was deleted from the page, with a warning to those of us who were using other brands that we were risking the lives of our birds.
I take issue with this. Tightly controlling conversations and limiting the dissemination of information to the viewpoint presented by a single company is NOT science and it is NOT advocacy for our pets. Like I say, there is useful information in this book. I am glad I purchased it and I will continue to use it as a reference. I cannot, however, recommend this book without the caveats I have detailed above.

Dont waste your money

This book, although containing basic info, seemed to be one big advertisement for a brand of essential oil. Although this brand name oil may be great, it seems to be the only reference. I'd ask for my money back but this item has no refund area. You can get the same information on line. Very disappointed. I had hoped for a better overview without the continuous company plug.

Really well laid out and easy to follow guide for the non-professional. I like the fact that you can cross reference which oils are good for which conditions.
